This store is a messy, do doubt about it, however.. this one of the best pet/fish stores in the midwest. Their assortment of reptiles, fish and tarantulas is outstanding. I've always found the staff to be friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable about their animals. If an individual doesn't know about your specific issue, they always find someone who does.
In addition they do a lot of good in their neighborhood, promoting the area.
This is one of the places I always make time for when I'm passing through Des Moines.
If you can't make it in, their website is an outstanding source of information as well.

Very filthy place, unknowledgable staff, animals not looked after well. Purchased a water dragon and they had been keeping it incorrectly - and gave me completely inaccurate instructions on how to care for it. Everything is also overpriced. I'm all for locally owned shops, but in this case, stay far far away.

I bought 2 cockatiels there two separate times.
The first one was a hand fed baby which cost me 50.00.
The second one was an adult in a too small cage, with 6 or seven others. No toys or anything in the cage.
They wanted 75.00 for one. I cant understand why they would charge more for an untame one. Well,I felt sorry for the birds so I bought a male and asked to get his wings clipped.
He totally tore my birds wing up.I've had him to the vet twice to stop the bleeding and get cauterized. He cannot fly and probably never will be able to.He still bleeds a bit if he flaps too much.
I also bought a bird play stand and asked if i could get a discount since I was paying 75.00 dollars for a bird also, and the man was so rude and hollered "what? you just want me to give it to you for free"? It was an awful experience. No one wanted to wait on me and they couldnt even answer any questions as far as age or how long the bird had been there. What a sad place for animals.
