I was both a customer (in the beginning soon after I moved to Des Moines from Wisconsin). As I was eating my meal, the owner approached me and aked if I cared to wash some dishes for him. I accepted.

The Taste of India quite literally kept me alive for the entire winter while in Des Moines. In exchange for work I got to eat free. This was a real blessing!

I made friends with Chef Alum. He became my closest friend in Des Moines. He made sure I ate and as soon as I walked in the door he made me chai tea! What a nice person he was.

As for the restaurant itself, service could of been much better. The owners son and his cousin acted as the servers. Half the time (as I personally witnessed it) the customer was ignored while the servers where preoccupied with the TV. Not good.

In my opinion, that TV blasting away really took from the ambience of the place. In place of that TV there should of been instead soft Indian music playing. That would of made a much better dining experience for the dear customer.

The owner did not keep his restaurant very clean either. Plus he had the bad habit of "recycling' food. Whatever one customer did not eat was sometimes served in part to the next patron!

My review might sound horrible in part. The Chef was very kind to me, in which I am most thankful. The owner however was something else. I feel sorry for him in many respects. Hope he changes some of his ways.

India Cafe is now Taste of India. Oh yeah this is the best place in town. I tried them all. I recommend the chicken tikka masala with naan - a winner for sure.

Insult to my culture: This place is an insult to Indian food. A Hispanic man who did not speak a word of English pointed us to our seats. He could not even understand "two Pepsi's please." But when a group of white customers came in the manager came out and gave them all sample Indian drinks while ignoring us. The food was disgusting and the Pepsi was flat. Hands down, one of the worst restaurants I've been to in my life.
