Simply Amazing: Don't let the strip mall location fool you! This place is a hidden gem that is slowly becoming quite the place to eat. The food is always excellent, whether you are just stopping in for the sushi or taking in the show of having your meal prepared in front of you. The Sushi bar is one of the best in the area and you'll know just as soon as you get your order placed in front of you! I gave Taki's a 5 if you are going with a large fun group, since the chef's feed off you having a good time and will buy your rounds of Sake bombs and put on a great show. On the other hand if you go as a couple and you sit at a table with people who are just there to eat and run (not recommended) I would give it a 4.5, The chef will generally just do the basics and move on as he's not having a good time.
I high encourage everyone to give Taki's a try, just be prepared for a large crowd so make reservations for both the sushi bar and your main course.
Good Sushi, Bad Decor: Taki, at first glance, looks like the typical suburban soccer-mom poser socialite restaurant. However, it is far from the typical West DSM haunt you may encounter.
The sushi is great... as good as I've had in Des Moines. I would recommend the Captain Crunch and the Tuna rolls. Beware of the smoked salmon, sometimes it can taste like uber-chewy fish gum. The red-bean and green tea ice creams are superb, and are a loverly palate cleanser.
The wait-staff acts appropriately snobby, a la the big city restaurant banter you would usually encounter. Go on Wednesdays, and get half-priced martinis.
Over all, this is a fun place to go for a birthday party or other special occasion. Beware of the corny faux-Zen decor, with inlaid rock fountain and live fishies.
