I miss this place desperately. Iowa City might have 10x the asian restaurants, but what it doesn't have is a really good bowl of pho. The pho here is really a cut above anything else you can get in the area, with a wonderfully rich broth. I'm craving it bad. The last time I was in town, they were closed on a vacation, and it left me heartbroken.
It's a bit of a hole in the wall, but they do some amazing things here. The food more than makes up for the rest.
As noted by another reviewer (broken glass incident), the owner/manager/head chef Lien is not best known for her interpersonal skills. Take a few minutes to strike up a conversation with her, though, and you'll be richly rewarded. You'll soon realize that what may be perceived as rude or tactless on a cursory level is easy explained through closer examination of cultural differenences.
(Hops down off soapbox...) As for the food, it's never short of fantastic, although I've never sampled the lunch buffet. The first-time diner will be well-served (heh, heh...) to discuss his/her culinary likes and dislikes with Lien. The menu can be a bit overwhelming with all of the dishes that are available. If you do insist on going it alone, the Thai and Vietnamese dishes really stand out. And even the standard Chinese fare is by no means pedestrian.
The one treat you DON'T want to miss is Lien's wonderful Vietnamese spring roll with peanut dipping sauce. If your idea of a spring roll is a deep fried log filled with chopped cabbage and mystery meat, you'll be shedding tears of joy after your first bite of this AUTHENTIC spring roll.
Anything Asian Gourmet lacks in decor or ambiance is far outweighed by the quality, flavor and value of its fare. Check it out soon. You'll be back for more.
Much to offer...: My love for Viet cuisine grew when I spent time living in STL, in the South City area which is known for it's asian restaurants. When I moved to Dubuque I was very glad to see a Viet-Thai restaurant here to get my "fix" of pho.
Unfortunately, since most Dubuquers don't seem to be adventurous in their eating habits (did you ever notice all the chain & fast food restaurants in this town?....even the mexican & chinese food places are HIGHLY "Americanized") they only serve pho on Saturday & Sunday.
If you've never had pho and live in Dubuque, I would recommend trying something new. It's a beef based soup with noodles, and they have a pretty decent version at this restaurant. The owner will help you with the proper way to eat it if you ask her, as she would love for more people to experience this.
The restaurant setup is very simple and sterile, but the food & price definitely make up for that. Unfortunately they only take cash ( and maybe local checks too) but take a friend or two and stop at the cash machine beforehand. Expand your tastes and try some great things on the menu!
