Wonderful sushi, though service can be slow and not very professional. The cooked dishes have all been average to very good. The couple of very negative reviews were probably those tables of drunk, obnoxious, out to impress each other with their dining "knowledge" that I've had to tolerate there on occasion. ;-) Located in a strip mall, the place is nothing fancy, just good food at reasonable prices... and forgive the wait staff. I've a feeling they know not what they do!
I have been to Sushi Popo many many times, this is the only place for sushi I would ever recommend to my friends. The sushi and maki rolls are just incredible. The chef made me a special roll which isn't even a menu item, I was so happy. Not to mention, if you are frequent customers, you do get special desert! Yummy! Well, I get one everytime I go! =) I got to say one thing, service is just average there, they don't really have a hostess there, but as far as I can see, the servers work pretty hard, I saw them running around just to answer phone calls, taking takeout orders, bringing out foods for dine-in and takeout customers. I guess just not enough servers there when needed...Who cares about the service if it's not even bad, well I don't, when the foods are the best in town. Other sushi places are fancy looking, service...hmm...ok...but the sushi are way to pricey and aren't even that great, why do I want to go to place like that if I have to pay so much? I am pretty sure it's impressive if you take your date to a fancy one...but then you will feel a bit stupid.
We went as a group for my birthday. The server ignored us for 15 minutes after we had been seated. We ordered drinks, which took 20 minutes to come (3 bottles of beer and an iced tea - 45 seconds, max to make). We ordered, and 45 minutes later, all our food came at once - appetizers, soup, and entrees. Except for the entree for one member of our party. His entree didn't make it out until we were all done. Our server had forgotten to bring it out before she disappeared again (where did she go? Narnia? Did she get lost somewhere?). It was stone cold, and he didn't want to make the rest of us wait, so he just had it put into a to-go box. We would have spent a lot more money there on drinks and sushi if our server had actually been present. We left a very small tip (which she did not deserve by any means), and as we walked out heard her complain loudly that people in Iowa City don't know how to tip. Please note, the restaurant was not busy (weekday). Food was marginal at best (typical "Chinese" food and malformed sushi), and too pricey for what we got. If you want sushi, go to Three Samurai. If you want chinese food, order in from Hunan. Don't waste your time or money on this joke of a restaurant.

I think your experience is atypical. Sushi Popo has also been quick with service every time I've been there during the week days. I think you must have gotten a new waitress, and it sounds like she was not trained well or at all. I disagree with you about the quality of the Chinese food at Sushi Popo. They have actual fresh ingredients; you can see and taste the garlic shavings if you order broccoli beef. And the crab rangoons are absolutely delicious. I've ordered from Hunan a number of times. The quality of their food is far below Sushi Popo, and everything has a greasy fast-food-salt taste at Hunan. I think I'll order some Sushi Popo now.
