I had the last straw after going to another repair place that showed me the drive belt for the overhead valves was installed wrong and fraying. If the belt would have broke, the pistons would have slammed into the valves trashing the engine for an expensive rebuild. On two other occasions I had to take the car back to get drive-train work corrected. I think the problem is they try to get too many cars done per hour.
First let me start by saying that I normally do the work on my vehicles myself. This experience has just reaffirmed my stance on doing the work yourself. I brought my 01 A6 into Mraz for timing and water pump work. I don't own the specialty tools to do the timing myself and also was strapped for time. They also found that a caliper had seized and informed me about that and also asked if I would like the spark plugs replaced (this was never done). I agreed to all the work. It was a fair price on labor. Markup on the parts I did not supply was about 45%. YIKES!
Got the car back, and not two days later a hose burst, and killed the alternator. Had the vehicle towed back to Mraz for a look. When talking to the shop, I asked for OBDII codes from the vehicle as well, and expressed concerns about the major overheat that occurred as a result of the hose bursting. They again charged inflated prices on the parts, and wanted to charge me about 800 in labor to replace the alternator. I explained to the company rep that I felt this was the result of their initial work on the vehicle and they should do the repairs on their dime. They did not agree with that statement and I was left to pay 150 for a hose, and do the alternator work myself. I also never got the OBD II readout.
When taking the car apart to replace the alternator, I noticed many things that disturbed me. 1) stripped bolts from their work that should have been replaced rather than left on the car, I counted 3 in total. 2) MISSING bumper long bolt. The bumper is held on by 2 of these. I had only one when I got the car back. 3) EGR tubing was eroded and broken apart, and they never informed me of it.
All this leads me to believe the following: They are not as thorough as they claim to be. They perform shoddy work and charge premium labor prices. They refuse to take responsibility for major malfunctions that occur as a result of work they performed. They overcharge on labor estimates. It took me less than 6 hours to replace my alternator in my garage with the car on jack stands (including running to the parts store for the new alternator), and this was my first time performing such an operation on this vehicle. I'm sure a trained mechanic could do it in 4 or 5, which I'm guessing is about book time on this repair. 88/hr X 4 hours is not almost 800 in estimated labor. They did, however, replace the passenger side mirror for me. Great consolation prize...
Long story short, if you have ANY, and I mean any mechanical ability with cars, do the work yourself. This place is not worth the money I threw at them and was left a very very unsatisfied customer. They will not be getting any return business from me.
They make my Saab feel good. Metropolitan Saab cannot hold a candle to Mraz. If you have an import and are sick and tired of the "I just got SCREWED" feeling after leaving the dealer, give Mraz an opportunity.
