I have bought 3 new cars in the last three years from Hiller. Brand new off the showroom floor the first time. They let me take it off the showroom floor to test drive the vehicle. The other two times they just flipped me the keys. Easy to work with and I love the coffee mugs.
The sales staff at this dealership will not allow you to test drive certain vehicles until you have signed a sales contract (subject to a successful test drive).
I don't know about the rest of the population, but this flies in the face of how I research and purchase my vehicles. I don't purchase a $35,000 vehicle based on how it looks sitting in the lot. I need to be able to drive it. I need to be able to have my wife drive it. I need to make sure that I can fit my kids' car seats decently into the back seat. How does it handle bumpy city streets? How does it handle getting onto the freeway?
All these things are not able to be determined by looking at the parked car at the dealership.
I can understand that they want to discourage unnecessary mileage being put on their vehicles by people that are not at all interested in buying. (That is the reason given to me by their sales manager) However, giving test drives and having a few cars with some miles put on them is part of the cost of doing business.
I am an owner of a previous-model Mustang. I'm interested in trading in my car for the new Mustang. (I'm approaching 40 years old, so I'm not some 18 year old kid looking for a joy ride.) My car has a stick. The next car I buy needs to have an automatic. I'm also considering buying a convertible. I'm not even sure I'll enjoy driving a Mustang with an automatic, and I've never driven a convertible either. These are questions I have that a test drive would answer.
Their "purchase first, test drive later" policy is disagreeable to me, to the point of frustration. Even though I bring my car to Hiller Ford for service (they are close by), I will not buy a car there for this very reason. I will patronize a dealership that can figure out how to qualify me as a potential customer and give me a chance to research my purchase ahead of time, instead of trying to get me to sign a contract first.
