I have liked the food here in the past- yesterday I ordered shrimp fried rice and hot and sour soup. The food smelled great! I dove into my fried rice to find my shrimp was .....slimy- I ate a few- and devoured the fried rice part- the hot and sour soup was very tasty, but oily-
Within 30 minutes of eating , I had to run to the toilet- I called Jade Garden the next day to tell them they might want to check their shrimp, as I got sick, the girl on the phone told me it was impossible their food made me sick- she even said that my diarrhea was not their problem. I will never eat there again, and I will go as far as to advise people NOT to eat there.
We have been ordering take out and dining in here regularly since we moved to Madison. We have tried a number of different 'Chinese' restaurants here, and this has beat them all on taste, price, and service. Even when the 'fancy' Japanese down the street started doing take out, BAD! So, looking for decent food for a decent price? Hit up the Jade Garden on Park Street!
Sorry Rachel W.--the communication is iffy the *majority* of the time. Getting clear communication is the exception, not the rule. I know, because I order from here a lot. I order from here a lot for a reason.
Communication snafus aside, delivery is indeed fast, service is friendly, and whilst some of the food (sweet n-sour chicken, eggrolls, ect) are placidly typical, enough of it is a step above the other paltry ethnic offerings in this town.
The chicken curry is spicy, redolent with thick hunks of white meat and fat mushrooms--far too many places overdo it on the using onion as filler in curry... I *hate* that, and it's so infuriatingly prevalent that JG gets huge props for doing exactly the opposite.
I had a horrific bout of food poisoning a while back that actually landed me in the ER. One of the few foods that helped nurse me back to health and regain my strength was the wonton egg drop soup. Brothy, warm, chock full of protein, and delightfully lacking that 'snot' like consistently that a lot of egg drop soups can be afflicted with.
The 'chicken strips' (skewers of sweet meat colored neon red with some sort of sauce) are always tender--you can pull it apart like one does with pulled pork--and juicy. I order this appetizer every single time.
A word about the dumplings--they are definitely handmade; not some frozen factory made junk tossed in a steamer or fry pan. The wrappers are thick and succulent and absorb the meaty juices of the filling--themselves a worthy appetizer before you bite into the wonderful, savory meat filling. The dipping sauce that comes with them is ... indescribable. Piquant, sharp, tangy, umami....? I don't have words for it, but I wish I could get more more MORE. I like to steal the sauce from my husband's order of dumplings to pour over my rice and other dishes.
I've ordered so many things from here over the last 2.5 years that I can't recall everything, but succinct to say--I've never had a bad experience with Jade Garden. My only regret is that, living mostly hand to mouth, I can't tip more than I do. I would LOVE to shove fistfuls of cash at these wonderful people!
oh and I might add... the delivery sky slinked away with my receipt, so I couldn't look at what exact charges were going where. That's right, sir, I'm onto you! Still love their food though.
EDIT: I no longer regret not tipping more. I started paying attention to the math lately. Today, I added up the total of my order; came out to around $23. With tax, it should've been about $25, tops! I was charged $32!! Now, they advertise free delivery for orders over $15, but apparently that just isn't the case. How else can you explain $8 extra finding its way onto my bill?? I can understand having to add a built-in delivery fee in these economic times, because people are stiffin' delivery drivers and whatnot like the dickens, and they've got to pay for gas and automotive upkeep, ect ect. However, I DON'T like that fee being hidden, in the sneaky weasel-esque hopes that the consumer won't notice, and shell out even more dough. Man, I feel a bit robbed. I think a 28% tip is more than fair, so don't look at me all agape and confused when I hand you as close to exact change as I've got and shut the door, Mr/Ms Delivery person. If you want to go back to getting cash tips from me, tell your store to stop adding hidden fees onto my order. I'm PAYING ATTENTION NOW.
