The ride in the countryside is wonderful as your taste buds are getting anxious for a good meal. And then there is it amongst the scenic Wisconsin fields, not yet to RandolphâFeilâs Supper Club. On a hot Wed. night in June, 25 of my friends from my apartment building ventured out for a fun supper. For a majority of the people this was returning to a favorite gastronomical spot but for me it was a new experience.
We settled down at the multi-sectioned bar to enjoy an adult beverage (after all, we were all over 60) and munch on the chips and salsa. Then we moved to the back room to sit at tables of 8.
Immediately three servers appeared to explain the specials (and prices) and efficiently take our orders, everyone getting a separate check (well the couples got one together, although I could not get any couple to include mine with theirs). The salad bar could indeed be a whole meal âthe usual lettuce and dressings but also 20 some other salads to try from green pea to kraut, slaw to rice pudding. Each night there is a wonderful homemade soup âham and potato our evening.
When we sat down 2 hot loaves of their famous bread appeared on the table and right after the salad plates were empty the entrees arrived served row by row, without any asking of what people had ordered. The right orders were in the proper places.
Meals included shrimp-- served skewered and deep fried , a half rack of ribs, NY strip, walleye, and the special of the night Jaigermeister. Four of us had Herbâs Special of steak covered by a foot of thin onion rings with optional mushrooms also. All 4 of us (including three men) took home some onions. I heard 25 very favorable comments and one loan complaint about a steak. Most took home âpeople boxesâ as the servings were more than ample. I tip at restaurants if my water glass is kept full and we even had pitchers of water on the tables. The checks arrived promptly and it was easy to pay by cash or credit card at the front desk. Prices were reasonable also.
Well worth repeat visits and recommending friends !! What more could you want from a dining experience?
I liked the German styled atmosphere and I also have to say it was extremely clean. The imported beer selection wasn't bad either.
The place had a salad bar and the salads were all fresh and quite tasty. I was however disapointed with the couple of German dishes that we ordered. The flavors were good but his meats were of poor quality. For example, the Sauerbraten gravy tasted authentic but the meat was chuck which is cheep and also never used, that sort of killed the dish for me, I would have gladly paid more for a proper cut of meat, the schnitzel was made of some sort of a compressed meat that was processed and I was really bummed out by that. Schnitzel should always be a solid cut of seasoned tenderized meat. This place has all the potential of being a great German restaurant if the chef should decide to step up the quality of the meats that they are using in each of their recipes. As for now I would probably never go back there again until I read someone elses reviews stating that they are using the right meats for each dish.
Excellent Restaurant. You absolutely must have Herb's Special if it is your first time, or look around, some one will have it. Good price for excellent food and atmosphere.
