My wife took me here as she had previously had positive experiences with the place. It was 11:30 on a Saturday and we stopped in for a bloody mary and lunch on a nice early Spring day (today)
WORST service ever. Our bartender, Steve Snider, was a rude, unengaging, lazy troll. He is without exception or peer the absolute worst bartender I've ever experienced. There were two other people at the bar, he was not busy. We were ignored, insulted when we asked for beer chasers with our bloody mary's, treated as if invisible while he whined to a couple of 'regulars' about his personal bullshit problems. For a good 20 minutes, the bar was left completely unattended. We had come for lunch, but were never spoken to at all as an inquiry as to if we would like to eat, even a 'how are you today', anything. This person needs to be unemployed at all speed. Maybe a job with the DMV or the Postal Service would suit this little toad of a man.
The rest of the staff looked forlorn and gruesome, as if behind the swinging doors to the kitchen, they were being repeatedly beaten and tortured or something. A bus boy took about 30 minutes to walk from the ice machine to the bar with a tub of ice, looking the whole time as if someone shot his dog.
This is a horrible place. We will NEVER be back.
On the bright side, right across the street is a nice little sports bar called Bucketheads. Normally I don't care for sports bars, but we would be damned if we gave Rhinelander Cafe and Pub any more of our time or money, so to Bucketheads we went. We were warmly greeted by our bartender Dan and treated to some GREAT bar food...I had a prime rib sandwich, my wife had a chicken chipotle rollup. Everything about the place was very friendly, nice and engaging. Our bartender got not only his tip but the tip intended for Steve at Rhinelander Cafe and Pub. I was very tempted to leave Steve a quarter, but opted to instead leave nothing, which is exactly what we got from him in terms of service.
If you're tempted to go to Rhinelander Cafe and Pub, go across the street. It might be a little more casual and a little noisier, but the food and the friendliness far make up for it.
As we drove home, I envisioned what might have happened if we would have stayed at the Cafe and Pub instead...our dead, cobweb encrusted mummified bodies would still be on those barstools waiting for someone to notice us, ask us if we'd like menus, acknowledge our presence, etc.
Excellent service and food, stopped in for lunch after a deployment ceremony for SAPPER company. Totally awesome employees and a friendly atmosphere, many servers and patrons stopped to thank my son-in-law for his service and to top it off the owner of the restraunt picked up the lunch bill for all the service men. Was a proud day to be an american and a resident of WISCONSIN.
The food is decent and I love the Germanic styling. No chance of picking the ladies up here though. ok matt

Mickey, Great that you are not going back. I love this place and would hate to have an attitude like yours sitting near me.
I hear ya, Pub Lover...but, if you had been treated like that, you might not love it so much! Service makes or breaks a place...and the more 'bad' experiences people have, the more the word gets around and the restaurant suffers. That bartender better shape up! (p.s. I've always liked the place in the past....but owners, bartenders and wait staff have probably changed a lot)
