I was refered by my Vet in Exeland to Andy Turner at the Chetek Vet Clinic because mine knows little to nothing about Equine lameness, and was honest. I live in Bruce. My mare is lame in the left rear fetlock, won't stand on it longer then a second, and won't even walk to get grain and if you bring her the food won't eat it. Gee, the large animal vet won't DRIVE to Bruce. Even after I explained horse was extremely difficult to load when sound. I'm disgusted. Why would I load a horse thats extremely lame in the rear leg and I suspect pastern injury as flex tests on hock and stiffle don't cause the horse a problem. Pasterns are delicate, I sure don't want an animal thats gotten worse over a week to get loaded into a trailer hauled on a bad leg, and then backed OUT of a trailer onto the bad legs, risking further damage and hiding the first problem due to new trauma on the leg.
I played referal tag till finally one vet would leave me a message, one was booked full and refered me Spooner Vet Clinic, whom got the number to a guy in Hayward. The guy from Hayward will come on down to Bruce and take a look. Chetek is a heck of a lot closer, guess this vet is a bit lazy, and not a horseman. First time I've ever encountered a need for a vet so badly in Wisconsin, and the first time I've ever encountered so many so vets unwilling to help when they actually have the expertise to do so, all for want of driving roughly 35 miles each direction. Actually, I've never encountered 'horse people' that would behave in such a manner, much less a vet. Their referal was one I'd already tried and also refered me back to Andy Turner. Apparently Andy Turner is well thought of for equine problems by a few vets.
All the vets were a bit shocked learn that he won't drive 'that far', and I gave them the number of the vet that is kind enough to come all the way to Bruce from Hayward.
Andy Turner might be the best vet for horses.
You just have to get the horse to him.
