Our West Highland terrier, Nora, was 14 yrs old and had a congested heart condition and one evening recently clearly had respiratory problems. I took her to Animal Emergency Clinic on University Avenue around 10 pm. It was a long wait, but it was an emergency visit and I expected the wait. The staff, however, quickly did what they could afte a quick examination to make the dog more comfortable until the vet had the time to examine her. When I met with the vet, she explained the X-Rays in detail showing the enlarged heart pressing against the lungs, and the cancer lesions, and gave me all the treatment options but candidly and tactfully recommended euthanising Nora. I appreciated the detailed diagnosis and presentation of all the options, as well as her own recommendation. I took her advice, not unexpected, and was impressed how sensitively they handled everything. Sure, the visit took two hours and I didn't leave until midnight, but this is an emergency clinic, the staff were busy with other pet consultations, I had no scheduled appointment, and was grateful that the clinic was open and available for consultation. When I met with the vet, she was fully informed about Nora's condition and gave me all the time I wanted to discuss her diagnosis and recommended treatment options. Afterwards, the staff followed up the visit with a card regarding Nora - a nice touch that is appreciated by any pet owner who has lost a beloved pet. I've used the clinic once before with another emergency surgery and the clinic handled everything professionally, and I would recommend the clinic without reservation. Keep in mind: this is an emergency clinic only, so don't expect drive-thru treatment - just be glad they are there and available to help your pet in a time of need.
I did not have a positive exp at this clinic at all. I called in advance I was pretty sure my dog was suffereing from chocolat poisioning. I took my small dog in who was shaking and very anxious. The technician was very nice. But not overly concerned. had me fill out paper work .Then we sat in ths room for 10-15 min waiting for a dr. Mind you there was no one else at the clinic at the time I was there. I went out into hall way called is anyone here no one showed up no one answered. THis was now 20 min into being there I just left and took my dog to UofM vet clinic where she was treated within min of arrival and is doing fine now. From my perspective the Dr. should have been waiting there since I had called earlier to treat my dog. They charge a lot of money for the Emergency thing so be there and take care of the situation don't leave people sitting around for 20 min.
Very Friendly: We took our cat there late one night when a cyst broke open and started bleeding. They were nice from the moment we walked in. We didn't have to wait long to be seen.
The doctor explained the problem well and what our options were for treating it. They would have been able to do the surgery that night which was nice. It was very late and both my husband and I had to work the next day so we decided to wait and have our vet take care of it a couple days later.
The basic exam was $97 which we found was about average for after hours clinics. The estimate for the surgery turned out to be about the same as what our regular vet charged us so they don't seem to be over-priced.
If you don't know the cities it's not in the greatest neighborhood but the parking is right by the front door and it's easy to find.
We really liked them and will go back next time one of our pets needs emergency treatment.
