| About: | At one time, Minneapolis had the lock on alternative rock hangouts. Not wanting to miss a good thing, Turf Club abandoned its long-time country format to cater to an alternative rock style. Soon rockers west of the river discovered the new turf and contributed to what has become one of the Twin Cities' most popular clubs. New bands have found a home to sharpen their acts during the week and on weekends the best the area has to offer takes the stage. An occasional national act makes the scene and it is packed to suffocation. Escape the music to play pool or darts in the lower level, the renovated Clown Lounge, featuring its own bar. Domestic and imported beers can be enjoyed by most but wine coolers, cocktails and soft drinks are also served. |

Went during the day to play Family Guy Pinball, that day they also got the Pirates Pinball Machine. The place was kinda dumpy but what else do you expect from a place where alternative rock is the main attraction.
The best live music bar in Mpls. is in St. Paul: even though the management has changed, the Turf Club is still awesome. This has to be the most unassuming, music loving scene in town. It's really not the place to go to wait for people to notice your fluevogs or $700 japanese straightening perm. Basically you get a beer, sit down, and watch some really great music and get over your scenster self.
The best kept secret in local live music: A quaint, little dive hidden amongst the dusty trail we call University Avenue, the Turf Club has always been my favorite night spot to check out local and not so local acts, and with an atmosphere that screams rock and roll, you can't help but order another long island and listen to the wide variety of musical styles on any given night. They range from country, blugrass, punk, hip-hop, soul, and good old heart wrenching rock and roll. The room is big with a bar room center, and I can say with the many times I've been there I have never had trouble ordering a drink, or hearing the music, or even eventually finding a seat. With little or no cover charge, the Turf Club is always first in my mind when the question is, "Where should we go tonight?". That says something right there.
