I read the reviews from 2005 and should have acted accordingly - food was nothing special, service poor, and only 3 beers to chose from. The dark one was flat. Patio dining was nice.
I've dined at Barley John's on three different occations, and I've always been pleased with the food, the service, and the beer.
The place is tiny, and seating is a concern. I don't know if they take reservations.
It's an interesting place, there's usually a wood fire burning out front. There are no TV's and no music. Patrons stop by to purchase beer for home consumption -- you need to bring your own bottle. I don't know of any other place that does this.
Beer and people with character: Barley John's is not your average cookie cutter brew pub; in such places I often find the beers bland and pretty much the same no matter what part of the country you're in. In fact, these days I would rather go to a regular bar where I can buy Bass or some microbrew than I would a chain brewpub. Barley John's is not such a place. In contrast, they produce some quite unique and VERY tasty brews. My favorite is the Little Barley Bitter; a classic session beer that goes down so very well yet allows one to maintain a certain degree of control! At the other extreme, Dark Knight and Dark Knight Returns are so strong that they are served in very small glasses only. Normally I don't really like very strong beers (in fact, I'm not sure it is correct to even call them beers) but these brews are delightful. Drink them as you would a glass of port after dinner, the taste is similar!! There is a spectrum in between and also an array of guest beers. The food is excellent - if you're into spicy things then try the chipotle pizza - it is out of this world but NOT for the faint-hearted! Very nice patio but space goes fast! This is as close to a British pub as you'll ever get, much closer than Brit's in Minneapolis, in my opinion! And my opinion should count for something as I am a British ex-pat! Barley John's has recently introduces a cask-conditioned beer but it goes VERY fast. Look out for cribbage night and live music. I HIGHLY recommend this establishment!
