dollar for dollar, pickle barrel is one of the best deals downtown. the daily special will get you a 1/4 sandwich and chips or soup with a drink for about $6 (as of this review). a half sandwich alone costs about the same, and both options are pretty filling.
pros
-convenient location
-cost
-quick
-always tastes good
-a decent selection of soups
cons
-cannot order 1/4 sandwich unless it is on special
-tip jar at counter
-sometimes the tastier soups are gone by mid-lunch hour
recommendation: roast beef sand, any cheese soup, and the aztec black bean soup.
Best Cheese steak sandwhiches hands down!: I grew up on the Pickle Barrel's cheese steak sandwhiches. It may not necessarily be what they are famous for, but I love them! I don't think they are made quite as fattening as authentic Philly steaks b/c I don't have a gall bladder, but can eat 1/2 a sandwhich with no problem....and 1/2 a sandwhich is plenty for someone with a healthy appetite! My mom gets the 1/4 size sandwhich and is always stuffed afterwards. My dad always get the full size and rarely is able to finish it.
I've never had anything other than their steak sandwhiches, but I took my college roommate there for her first time, she got a coldcut sandwhich and raved about it for days! And to top it off, the whole reason for it's name "Pickle Barrel", is they have a barrel full of whole pickles and for every 1/2 sandwhich or larger you buy, you get a free pickle. The price is great, especially considering how much you get.
The store on main street shares its space with the Rocking R bar, so get your steak and a beer too! For those who aren't familiar with Bozeman, there is no public smoking so even though it's with a bar, you don't need to worry about smoke, and despite it being with a bar, it's a great place for the family to go. I live in NC now, but I make sure that whenever I go visit my folks we make at least 1 stop to the Pickle Barrel!
