I've been going to Platek's for over 15 years and I've NEVER found a better filet mignon. Believe me, I've tried! I live in the Madison area and I've tried filet at some of the most upscale steak houses in the city, but still have not found one that even comes close to the filet mignon at Platek's. I've even tried a Kobe beef filet but it wasn't as good.
Whoever is responsible for the filet mignon (and the prime rib), PLEASE KEEP DOING WHATEVER IT IS THAT YOU DO SO WELL! The steak is just so tender, but has a nice charcoal sear on the outside, it's marinated or seasoned PERFECTLY and comes with the most delicious au jus you could imagine.
Besides, the steak, it's a great (but small) midwestern supper club. They offer the traditional supper club experience with a bread basket that includes the obvious bread, crackers and bread sticks, a relish tray with veggies and dips, soup AND salad (or tomato juice) and a really really good house salad dressing. This all comes with your meal...no paying an extra $3.99 for a cup of soup with your meal like at chain restaurants.
I can't really comment on anything else on the menu because every time we go I get the filet mignon...I won't pass up the opportunity to have an AMAZING steak. We're planning to go there again in November and I'm looking forward to another great meal.
Went there last Saturday. Things were great from the time we walked into the door. Hostess was awesome and accomidating. Had to wait a few miinutes for our table (we had a reserervation). Place was hopping but they didn't miss a beat. Our waitress brought us a relish tray (don't see those too often) and took our drink order in a timely fashion. The menu and the specials were very nice....hard to pick..they all sounded great. Had the crab stuffed shrimp with.. I think it was a citrus sauce. Hubby had the Beef Wellington. VERY good. My husband had their beer sampler and enjoyed every one (I'm not a beer drinker). Wine list was well varied. A overall wonderful dining experience! Can't wait to go back....
Went to Plateks last night and was completely disappointed with the entire experience from the moment we sat down until we left. It is VERY disappointing because we have had many wonderful experiences before this one and not sure what made this resturant go downhill so far. First we were able to get right in being sat in a corner where I saw obvious tables open and were open for the entire time we dined, really that is small compared to the disappointing meal we were served. First we asked the rude waitress if there were any specials which she replied, " no, just order off the menu". Ok.About 5 minutes later the same waitress told the table next to us that they had fish fry. Is that not a special? The soup came, we were told it was a "Dutch potato" this soup was nothing more than chicken noodle with chunks of potato..next the salad, lettuce on a plate with 1 tomato, we also ordered Blue cheese and it basically tasted like mayo with no chunks of blue cheese anywhere to be found!! The bus crew did not even bring us a glass of water. My husband ordered a New York MR and received it basically raw!! The veal that I ordered was ok, just smothered on Bearnaise sauce served with veggies overpowered with mint. Overall we were completely disatsified with the experience and will not be going back any time in the near future and DO NOT suggest any one who is looking for a quality meal go there. You will be disappointed if you had ever had a wonderful experience there, we were.

Wow, I don't know what the problem was that night, but we have NEVER had anything but delicious food there. If you do not have a reservation they will not seat you at a table that is set up for guests with reservations. I do not like my steaks pink at all. The first time I went there, my future husband ordered my steak for me, medium rare, it was delicious. Later when I saw the leftovers it was really pink, (the restaurant was dimly lit). It was the best steak that I have ever had and if I could get over the "pink look" I'd eat it that way everytime. Just last summer we took my step-son(by his request) for his 23rd birthday. My husband and stepson had a swordfish entree and were able to sample the sauce that came with it beforehand. They were totally impressed with this dish. Then we went again this February for my step-daughter's birthday and again the food was great. Maybe you should give it another try and if you have any problems request to talk with the owner Jim who is also the chef. I'm sure he would want to know of any problems. For those of you who have never eaten there, give it a try. Reservations are recommended.
