The school tends to favor people who are enthusiastic about Montessori. They also look for potential parents that will make big donations and have already introduced their children to Montessori.
I noticed 2 different situations when the teachers saw you observing them and when they were unaware they were being observed. It was concerning.
We loved Chiaravalle when our first child went back in 2007. The toddler program was wonderful. Those 2 teachers were wonderful. They were informative, loving, and had a great connection which the children and parents felt as well.
Unfortunatley now there are so many new teachers with less experience trying to run a class and my husband and I both felt like things were very unstructured. We had a terrible time with communication and often felt dismissed.
This year we are attending Near North Montessori and look forward to a more well rounded, positive experience.
I don't know why people thought buying the school and raising tuition was a good idea in times like these. My kid was left on the playground and- no one noticed. There are 3 teachers!! The assistants are useless in the class. One of the head teachers is a sweet girl and the morning one I saw fuming at a child who wouldn't sit and have snack. These are little kids and she was out of line. I mentioned this to the director who's solution was to sit in the room and monitor the situation. Well she isn't going to be that way in front of her boss and she already has a very different attitude when she is aware of an adult watching. There is a 2 way mirror and I have seen it hands on. I almost pulled out mid-year but then I was told that I would not be getting back the huge investment I already payed until my spot was filled. (This was explained in a very harsh and abrasive way as well.) Next year public school. It's a crime to be that misleading when it comes to the safety and education you choose for your kids. I'm not the only one who feels this way. It's come up with other parents that the priorities of the school are not in order and for what we pay there should be a better team running the place. If I could do it over again, I would have never picked Chiaravelle. The teachers we met were not even the teachers that ended up teaching the class. Misleading and not worth the problems.
Chiaravalle Montessori school is not a "real" Montessori school because the head of the school does not understand how to reflect true Montessori philosophy. This may have had an effet on our son's teachers. This was our first and last year at this school. No one is very helpful when it comes to communication. His teachers gave such negative feedback on our 2 year old son and very unhelpful when we asked for help. The director is just lost, and unsupportive as is the head of school. Everyone tries to maintain a fake kindness but Its not hard to overhear the truth when teachers and staff gossip about childeren and parents right in the hall! An aweful aweful school.
