2NE HAND TUNES is one of the oldest record shops in the Chicago area. They specialize in used lps, cds, and video. Though they also have some kitschy works like chip bowls made out of old vinyl records, some designer wallets (that look like they were made out of old album jackets), and some ancient record players. The atmosphere is friendly to both indie-hipster college students, and long-time music fans who remember what record stores were like 20-30 years ago.
On the positive side, this is a store that rewards browsing as thousands of forgotten treasures lie in the stacks; and it is not uncommon to find a few titles you want to purchase that you hadn't planned on before entering the store. Prices (at least on cds) are good to fair. Most are in the $3.99 to $8.99 category, and they place stickers to warn of imperfections on the disc.
The negatives are in terms of display and location. Instead of the customary used cd dispay (where jewel cases are displayed while the discs are behind the counter) here the cd booklets are displayed in plastic blister paks (2 to a sleeve) making browsing a slower process. Also the price and condition stickers are placed on the front of the booklets. [Though I was able to remove them without residue.] If you'd like to purchase the item, you bring the booklet to the counter. The only other negative I found was in its location. It is just southwest of the main area of Evanston Where there are only a few meter spots available. You may find parking during midday or meal time hours to be a hassle.
While I didn't find my first choice, I still did okay. The clerk was helpful and friendly. Record stores are a dying breed, and even Evanston has lost several major shops throughout the '00's. For those of you who still enjoy the record shop experience, this place is worth a visit.
