Fossil Rock Recreation Area is under NEW MANAGEMENT and is looking forward to a wonderful 2012 season. Many changes are taking place everyday. Upgrades of the roads, restrooms, beach and recreation center are under way. Gone will be the loud and uncontrolables and All will have a great time at FOSSIL ROCk If you have been here before and were not happy then you need to come back and get a great camping experience.
We travel for a living (work at the Nuclear Power Plants). We had to come to this campground for the outage here in Wilmington/Joliet area. Is isn't the greatest, I haven't been to the showers and such mainly because we have our own. A lot of the people staying here live here, so I don't think it is worth tent camping or anything. Scenery is great, but the staff is rude. Probably the only sour taste in my mouth from this place. Sure, it isn't the greatest and quite honestly, it is quite expensive ($325/1 month of lot rent, $200 electric deposit & $40 gate card deposit). I don't recommend as a nice place to vacation, but if you have to live here for a month or so, not bad.
After reading reviews our expectations were low. We decided to give it a try anyway.
Run down, lots of falling apart sheds and stuff. Most lots are permanant residents. The office keeps short hours. The beach is unkept, the water is foamy and slimy. No picnic tables on any of our sites (there were 3 families in our group) and only one firepit. The dump station was full. Pricey, especially considering the above.
The scenery is breathtaking with trees and hills. Several lakes and winding waterways through old stripmines to explore. Our children LOVED playing in the water, searching for tadpoles and fish. We had a baseball game on the beach. There is a petting zoo. The fishing was good. And the icing on the cake was the miles of paths to explore and hunt for fossils. Lots of fossils.
If you want a well groomed facility, maybe not your best choice. We had an amazing time there despite. It's not perfect, definitely a diamond in the rough. Can't wait to go back.
How many stars do I give this place? I give mother nature 5 stars for the trees, hills, waterways, wildlife and fossils. I take away one star for the rundown, abandoned trailers and falling apart buildings. I take another for bathrooms, dump station and slimy beach.
