On a recent trip to Chicago, I had one of the worst nights of my life. Me and a friend were out enjoying the Chicago night life before heading back to Milwaukee. Incidently, the only form of transportation we could find to Milwaukee after 8pm was a Greyhound bus. (Typically I much prefer the service of Amtrak or Megabus) We rushed over to the Greyhound station even paying the Taxi driver a generous tip to get us there in a hurry. We were quite pleased with ourselves to make it to the station 10 min. before our bus was leaving. When we approached the ticket counter an extremely rude "customer service" rep who happened to be African American proceded to tell us that she wasnt going to sell us tickets because we did not get there enough ahead of time. We could see that the bus hadnt even arrived yet and there were people still in line but we let it go and asked her to please sell us the tickets. While she began processing the tickets she kept making rude comments about how she was doing us a favor because we should have been there an hour ahead of time and that we could'nt show up to an airport 10 min. before our plane left so we shouldnt do it there. I observed that she had no problem giving the African American couple that were in line ahead of us tickets to the same bus so that's when I got a bit irritated. I mentioned that a Greyhound station and an airport are completely different because obviously at an airport you have to go through various security procedures making it necessary to show up an hour early. She could smell that me and my friend had a couple of drinks and accused us of being drunk. We had two drinks each, we were definitely not drunk and we were speaking to her quite rationally. She left the counter and told us that the security guards wanted to speak with us. She had already filled them in with her side of the story and the security guards (who were also African American) were obviously biased. They escorted us out without even listening to our side of the story and we ended up stranded in downtown Chicago at 10pm. While walking and trying to find a hotel we were actually propositioned by a pimp and a prostitute (true story) and they followed us in their car during most of our walk until thankfully we found a taxi. Who knows what could have happened to us because of this extremely racist Greyhound staff. I myself am not one and have always worked to discourage it. This type of behavior sets anti racist movements back by hundreds of years. I will NEVER attempt to take a Greyhound ever again.
Sorry that happened to you Crystal. Not to make light of your situation but, the way you told that story was kinda funny. Yes, greyhound does suck! Even the drivers! My daughter had to ride a few times (NO ALTERNATE).
I believe this happens way to often, customer service now a days really Sucks. I think if the Lady in the ticket booth was on the other side of the glass, she would have exspected somebody to give her respect, or she would have caused a BIG scene, Too often we choose not to stand up for ourselves, and Im sick of it. Im glad nothing happened to you, and that you got home safe.
