The steak was good enough. The service was great. Sat at the bar and Brandon provided constant service despite crowd at bar.
Had the onion soup. Wasn't anything to get excited about, but the beef chunks was a nice touch. Cowboy (bone in) ribeye was cooked perfectly, but the cut wasn't generous for the price. Desert was the chocolate creme brulee. Don't do it. It was served cold.
Overall, it was better than some, much worse than others.
What I really like about the Saloon is that it is not stuffy like some other fine dining and steakhouses in Chicago. The ambience is warm and welcoming. Since the smoking ban took effect you can really smell those steaks right when you walk in.
We had a very friendly host who checked our reservation and asked us to have a seat at the bar as we were early. Soon after they seated us and we were immediately served bread and water. Our waiter was there pretty quickly as well and was so friendly and helpful with the menu.
I highly recommend the bone-in filet. The grilled asparagus and creamed spinach were excellent as well.
We barely had room for dessert but the key lime pie was outstanding.
All in all a very pleasant experience with ggreat food and very friendly crew. Next time I'm in the Gold Coast area I will return.
Cozy, Knowledgeable Staff, Yummy!: Boyfriend took me here for a birthday dinner. There is a small coat check when you walk in, they take you past the bar, and there is the dining room, painted in warm tones, with black and white framed photos on the wall, dim lighting, candles on each table. The waiter was SO knowledgeable and told us about each cut of meat, and showed us too. The order came quickly and was delicious. I actually like the sides more than the meat. But it was ALL delicious. And they checked on us several times to refill drinks, and ask if we needed anything. It's not a large place, but fairly busy. But we didn't need reservations on a Tuesday night at 7:30.
