To the person below me saying that Mexicans can't cook Bar-B-que, it's bar-b-que not soul food btw. It's not that Mexicans can't cook it, they have been cooking it there for about 20 years now, you just know say this because the food is terrible now. It's the way they are instructed to cook it now that Leon Sr. has passed and Leon Jr. has taken over. You want real old school Leon's? Go to the one on 47th and Archer or the one on Ashland and Fullerton. They still do it the old way.
This has got to be one of the worst places I've ever eaten. I hate to say this but Mexican people can't cook Soul Food, but they can cook the hell out of Mexican food.
Saying that, the last time I ate at Leon on 79th Igot left the 53rd bank across the street and was very hungry, I order a slab of pork ribs with hot sauce. Then I went to Kenwood liquor for a case of Coronas.
By the time I got home to eat the meat taste like it had been boiled then smoked( I'm from Memphis that's a crime punishable by death.) the sauce was watered down to the point of no taste at all. I've never been back there since then, and will never go back.
Not the best and not the worst. Leon's is a great place to head after a night where you might have a few beers and need something late. It seems like they smoke the ribs a bit too much. The hot sauce is just that HOT, almost to a fault.
They would get 4-stars if it were not for the lack of service. Recognize that the people in the neighborhood deserve better than surley men and women serving the food.
