I have to say this place suprised me. I usually enter a state of deperession when I visit small towns in the midwest. The bland meals really get me down. The food is authentic from fresh salsa with a bit of a kick (and fresh cilantro too), to the chile colorado which is very spicy, to the pork carnitas which is layered in more subtle spice. The especialities of the house are the best. They do have the Americanized stuff ie combo platter too so everyone should be happy.
Excellence!: A wide variety of mexican cuisine, very affordable and authentic. Thumbs up!
Best Mexican Food East of the Mississippi: Not since Alfredo's, in Lomita, CA, have we enjoyed Mexican food so much. So much of the mid-west's Mexican food is too bland, probably prepared for the Gringos. But, El Rancherito has Salsa with a zing, as well countless savory dishes. It's actually the first place I've found, east of the Mississippi, that has good chile Colorado. The Refried Beans are homemade--not out of a can. Plus, they actually have a vegetarian section on their menu! Desserts, such as their Sopapillas with ice cream--mmm,mmm,mmm. But usually, who has room for dessert.
