I have to honestly say, we'll never frequent this establishment again based on our visit last weekend (05/23/09). The service was the worst! Drinks were especially expensive and the food...well, if they call that Irish, I'll never go back to Ireland again! Overspiced, overcooked...there were 6 of us there and none of our food was even remotely spectacular. The "Shepard's Pie", not sure where they got their recipe, but they really should consider a good Irish cookbook. One fellow with us ordered the "Montreal Steak" (don't let the McCormick's Company hear you're using that name-TRADEMARK) and let's just say even the cow wasn't happy. I would not recommend wasting your time or money, head to St. Louis to McGurk's or Helen Fitzgerald's for REAL Irish atmosphere. Oh, and I almost forgot....45 minutes to receive our meals and they served the salads WITH the meals not prior. Hello...management? Are you hiring?
More disappointment. During my latest monthly visit, the service had improved somewhat, but the drink prices are becoming ridiculous. The burgers seemed to be somewhat smaller, but that may have been a fluke.
The owners need to spend some time making the patrons feel at home. Right now, other than a good server, it is a cold, neutral atmosphere. I long for the "old days" here.
I wish I could love this place as much as I used to. Over the past years Castletown has been declining in terms of what an Irish pub is all about. The place is still a great gathering of people and the customers are what keeps this place going. The prices have taken a spike lately and I can understand the rise of food costs but common...they are trying to be a full service resturant and a local pub at the same time and are losing on both ends. How about cutting a few of the menu items to make up for the cost? I mean really...do you need to have pasta on the menu at an Irish pub? Also what's with the drink prices? $5.oo for mixed drinks and over $5.00 for a pint of Guinness!? Not to mention that they charge "extra" when bands play...did they ever mention that to you? Take a few notes from O'Malley's pub in St. Louis and see how a real Irish pub is ran. Good prices, minimal but appropriate and good menu, and owners who are loyal to the customers as customers are loyal to them. Also, where is Tom and Ed (owners)? Do they even own the place anymore? I used to see at least one of them throught the week but not much anymore. Listen, if your getting tired of running a pub sell it to someone who will take care of the customers, the same people who have kept the place alive over the years...a lame newsletter every few weeks telling us "see ya there" is begining to sound like a ploy for our money rather than our patrionage and friendship.
