Scovill Zoo is a fantastic place that may be one of the only places in our area that is completely family-friendly. Its in its own secure location, away from much of the crime and grit of the inner-city, and sanctioned with rules conducive for family adventure. You wont find any lude or obscene situations here! It's the little things, like this small but wonderful zoo, that allows me to see the world in a better light...one that's carefree and fun...the way it should be! Beware, though: coming to the zoo with your kids, or even just with another adult just may make you revert back to being a kid again, if just for a little while! It is amazing to see such beautiful species of nature at its best in what really does seem to be their natural habitats. Its nice that these animals have such ample room to roam about, and never do you see their living spaces in grimy or less than appealing conditions. Quite an amazing feat by the hard workers at the Zoo...they deserve such great praise. Thank you, Decatur-for such a great place to visit on those lazy, wonderful summer days. Folks, you don't want to miss out on the Scovill experience! And, kids or not, after your Zoo visit don't forget the adorable (read:quaint) Childrens Museum right next door! It's not particularly huge, but nonetheless they have some pretty amazing exhibits that even an adult can enjoy! Both facilities provide the perfect setting for a very entertaining (and affordable!) day.

Scovill zoo: Fall has arived and the animals will be hybernating soon. Get on out to the zoo and have some fun. It is a relaxing place to be with a great view of Lake Dectur. Don't forget that in October, if you have little ones, there will be Boo at the Zoo (trick or treating).

Scovill Zoo: The best recreation area for families. Walk through and see animals from many areas around the world. The well cared for zoo has signs telling about the animals, a children's petting zoo where there are hand washing facilities....huge camels and beautiful cheetas...there is a free day during the summer and a great place to spend a day, afternoon, have lunch, ride the train or take a ride on one of the "extinct animals" Join the adventure it is for children of all ages. Love it....

Yes, I know, I just went on and on about how great the Zoo is already, but I MUST comment on the 'extinct animal' carousel. If you have never seen it, you should! Its a little kids dream...beautiful hand-carved animals represent (how many?) extinct species and float dreamily to classic carousel music. The perfect photo opportunity...if theres any one place in the Zoo that you would like to capture your childs day spent at the Zoo, the carousel really beats all! It is a favorite from my own childhood!
