In 2008, the Food Network and Bon Appetite magazine named 17th Street as having the best ribs in the country. The ribs and pulled pork are simply fantastic, with the other barbecue entrees being very good, but not transcendent like the ribs and pork. I believe 17th Street has the best baked beans and potato salad in the world, but this doesn't get as much press as the ribs. Entrees run from about $7-8 for a sandwich with two sides to about $20 for a full slab of ribs with two sides. The restaurant is kid-friendly. If you are coming to the Southern Illinois for any reason, it's worth driving out of your way to stop at 17th Street.
17th Street Bar & Grill is was just recently honored on the Food Network for having the best ribs in the world, or something along those lines. I don't know about the best in the world, but they are pretty dof gone good. I grew up with the original location in Murphysboro, and still prefer the food there to the newer locations in Marion and in O'Fallon. The ambiance is better at the new locations, but I think the food has suffered a little. That being said, it's still better than most in the area for BBQ ... just a little inconsistent at times. I'd be remiss not to mention beer ... there's not much available that's out of the ordinary, or that you couldn't get anywhere else in town. More or less the standard domestics and a couple imported macros like Beck's. Otherwise, very run of the mill. No pun intended, as Mike Mills is the owner ... I'd love to have the chance to help make 17th Street's beer selection worthy of their award-winning food. But alas, most people's food palates are much more developed than their beer palates ... and that's just the way it is. I still contend that good food calls for good beer ... sadly, 17th Street only has the food part down so far. Buy hey, that's important too!
The best BBQ in Southern Illinios: Food was great! The waitstaff and bartenders are the best in Southern Illinios and pretty nice looking too. I'll be back
