The third-largest zoo in the country, with 90 acres of space and 700 species of animals on exhibit, this place is a must-see on a family vacation to St. Louis. The zoo is open year-round with free general admission. Some areas, however, do require a small fee, including the sea lion shows, the new insectarium and the children's zoo, where kids can pet the animals. Other areas include the big cat country, the jungle of the apes, the primate house, the river's edge (an elephant exhibit) and feeding areas for bears and sea lions.
I can honestly say that I was severely disappointed in my recent trip. I took my aunt, husband and 2 year old son there and it was awful. The park was dirty, the staff ws rude and the prices was horrible. The older gentleman in the ticket booth for the childrens petting zoo was flat out mean to me when I asked why they were charging $4 to go animals, we got onto the train only to go whipping through the stations without any narritive of anything and when I asked for directions I was greeted with responses that one wouldn't expect to hear from employee's. At one point a zoo employee told me to "read the map stupid" when I asked her where the restrooms were at. I will not be returning to the zoo untill they can straighten their mess out and I have contacted the zoo on this matter.
Having the privilege of attending Covenant Theological Seminary afforded many other blessings of living in St Louis. One of which was the St Louis Zoo. The zoo would be spectacular even if it was not free and in many ways excels other zoos I have had the privilege to experience (San Diego, Los Angeles Portland Oregon to name a few). If you are traveling through this section of the country it is worth the visit. If you live in St Louis and have not visited, shame on you. I spent many hours studying there which is difficult, in-that, there is always something to see.
