Crown Candy Kitchen
(314) 621-9650
1401 Saint Louis Ave, St Louis, MO63106Get directionsCross Streets: Between N 14th St and Blair Ave
Opened in 1913 by Grecian immigrants Harry Karandzieff and Pete Jugaloff, Crown remains much the same in decor and style. It is currently run by Harry's descendants. Great confections, ice cream, a variety of sandwiches, milkshakes, malts, sundaes and banana splits make this a sweet-tooth's paradise. If you are adventurous, try the malt contest, wherein if you can drink five malts in half an hour, you get them all for free. The service is good, but things can get busy and a bit hectic.
Great little place! :) Husband and I visited a couple of years ago when I was "newly" pregnant with our youngest. She's now almost 2 and I can't wait to take her and her big brother and big sister there this coming weekend. This isn't the place to go if you're in a hurry. There's usually a line and everything is made to order. Expect to wait at least 30 minutes. BUT it is soooo worth the wait. The waitresses were cheery, but not "fake", the food is classic and wonderful and the desserts and candy are to die for! This isn't a modern day "Starbucks" coffee shop...it's the real deal. This is the type of place your grandpa had his lunch break at every day. A lovely little step back in time. Don't count your calories or fat grams for a day and enjoy the experience of this little jewel.
I've seen several comments about the neighborhood being a bit "undesirable". While I admit this isn't the neighborhood I'd enjoy being lost in at 2 am...everyone we encountered during our lunchtime visit was friendly and respectful. I was called "ma'am" at least a dozen times. :) If you're not planning to be in the immediate vicinity... make a special trip! This place is worth it. :)

Opps! I was so busy talking about the charm of the place that I forgot to make "suggestions". The Turkey Bacon Melt was delicious! It was apparent that all the ingredients were fresh. No limp lettuce at this place. :) If you like malteds...and I know that's a bit of a "love it or hate it" thing...but I fall into the LOVE it category. The Hot Fudge malted was the best malt I've ever had. It even tops the little drive in that I worked at in high school. I didn't know that was even possible. Great malt flavor, but the flavor of the ice cream and hot fudge still came through. Wonderful!
Crown Candy Kitchen is the coolest old world restaurant in all north St. Louis. I swear that BLT has a half pound of awesome bacon on it and along with that sandwich you get a nice plate of chips and cool half sliced pickle. For the desert I suggest the malt. One malt can fill up two people. For a couple you can eat a great meal for a bit less than twenty bucks.
