The absolute worst bar in the whole city of St. Louis. I cannot believe why anyone would want to go the smokiest place this side of the smoking rooms at Lambert Airport. The Bartenders are rude, the drinks are expensive and the place is so loud when a band is there that you cannot speak to anyone you are there with. Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY! I cannot say enough bad things about this place.
The Best: ...in so many ways.
As others have mentioned and you probably have already heard- Famous has The Best Bloody Marys in town, and they happen to make a damn good martini as well. Martinis, well... let's face it- they're hard to screw up. Famous does them perfectly, though, and they offer a variety of "flavored/fruity" ones for the novices, too.
But the true measure of a bar might just be their Bloody Mary. I've long been a fan of the Bloody, but it's been my experience that ordering one out ALWAYS leads to a letdown. They're either too thin, watery or weak, and *never* spicy enough. The only place that has come close to satisfying me previously is The Old House restaurant, but that's way down in Kimmswick... not exactly a social hotbed, either, if you know what I mean. Enter the Famous Bar and their selection of multiple(!) Bloodies... The first one I tried (their "Cajun") was as spicy as I make 'em at home! Thick, too. They have several (of varying ingredients and spice levels) on their dedicated menu. Takes a little time to make, but it's worth it. Heck, they even serve them the "right" way- with a shot glass of beer on the side. We have a winner!
But the drinks are only the tip of the coolness iceberg at Famous... Come for the drinks and the excellent service by the very classy bartenders, but stay for the always-great live blues music on Fri/Sat nights, and the interesting and always-friendly crowd. I'm normally not a fan of crowded bars, but for Famous I make an exception since the crowd here lacks the attitude you find at most other hotspots. Come dressy, or come in jean shorts and sandals (and I've done both)... you always feel welcome.
Absolutely the best neighborhood bar in town. But worth seeking out even if you're not a neighbor! See you there...
Once you go Bloody...: Living a few blocks from Famous Bar helps, as it is packed beyond sardines on the weekends, but a crowd of regulars on weekdays (especially afternoons). They have THE BEST Bloody Mary's in town...and having been around to find the best, I should know. They offer them in a wide range...from your standard fare to the more exotic. The Cajun Bloody has the best green bean on the planet!! The bartenders are FANTASTIC...there's no extra flair, just really good drinks. For those that like things more frou, they have an extensive martini list, and there isn't a shot these guys can't make (except for a sandanista, but that's because they are missing some of the finer ingredients). It's a great place to be a regular, and I'd definately save it for the quieter times...
