You get what you pay for: The reason I renewed my lease is that it is the cheapest place to live downtown AND I have a balcony. With all the places going condo – it is great to see a place that still rents apartments.
My apartment is fine – I steam cleaned the carpets, painted the walls, and had a window washer come in to wash the outside windows.
BUT you truly do get what you pay for. The common areas are very run-down and dirty. The cleaners only do surface cleaning – not any deep cleaning which it desperately needs. The hallway carpets are extremely dirty with stains especially near the garbage closet. The basement and stairway have concrete floors and haven’t been cleaned in years or been cleaned with very dirty water. The laundry room is in the basement and is dirty – just don’t drop anything on the floor and check the machine before you put anything in.
Two years ago there was security staff on almost 24/7. In the past few months, I haven’t seen a single one – I don’t think they have them anymore. Let’s face it, it is downtown and it is ok during the day, but at night it does get scary. There are homeless shelters within two blocks of here and a park two blocks away that many homeless people sleep in. Homeless people seem to make it into the building and get into many of the vacant apartments or camp out in the lobby.
Also with it being a cheaper place to live, some of my neighbors are not the most desirable. One group finally moved out – they use to pee in the elevator and break the locks on the outside doors. Now we have someone that cannot spell who likes to put graffiti in the elevator.
The office staff is a mixed bag (the accountant is a sweetheart). GET EVERYTHING (and I do mean everything) IN WRITING. I got burned on this. The leasing agent told me one thing and come to find out it wasn’t true – guess who is paying for that mistake.
When you call in about anything that needs fixed in your apartment, generally you have to wait quite a while and make numerous phone calls and each time they tell you “This is the first time I heard about this” even if they were the one that you talked to before about this issue. Last year I didn’t have an air-conditioner that worked while it was in the mid 90’s and it took a week for them to put in a new one. They wouldn’t just give me the a/c to put in myself.
Lastly, the elevators: Last year when it rained, it rained in the elevators. For a while both were down, but they did re-open one. This year, I got stuck in the elevators twice. (In the middle of when I was talking to the owner about this, he took out his cell phone and started to talk to someone else.) Now the elevators have been shut down for a week by the Fire Marshall and will be shut down for at least three more weeks because the parts are obsolete and have to be manufactured.
Like many things in life - you get what you pay for.
A Mixed Bag Is Now ALL BAD!: This place once had good things going for it, including responsive maintenance. Now, maintenance men are part-timers and waiting for repairs is an exercise in futility (especially in our mid-Aug 2007 heat wave-people with no working A/C wait a week or more-under previous owners, such a problem would be considered an "emergency" and somebody would be over quickly. The current owners INITIALLY seemed willing to invest in the property-now most buildings are without elevator service because they failed safety inspections that the owner held off having for as long as he could! The pool has been shut down by the Health Department. Bugs love it here! I've NEVER seen roaches so big and plentiful as in the last year. Many neighbors (the few that are left!) are decent, but the caliber has gone downhill lately-some newer ones let in their homeless buddies and there's urinating in the elevators (before the were shut down) and in the lobbies. With the city being on the owner's tail for various code violations, no improvements AT ALL have been made to the common areas-flithy hallway carpeting, wallpapering peeling off, outside apartment windows unwashed in ages, outside landscaping (they need to plant some grass seed, instead of just letting the few patches left go wild!). The canopies have blown off some of the buildings' outside entranceways. This place is basically now a high rise slum! Two of the 5 buildings are supposed to be shut down by the end of 2007-the owner will tell one person it's so they can be "upgraded" and another it's to save on the heating cost. Considering elevator repairman, the gas company, and probably the heating/hot water providers (we now have only intermittent hot water these days) haven't been paid, who is he kidding about "upgrading" this place!! At least his cheap ways are seeing the light of day in the media and he's been hauled to court to fix at least the elevators (which he's still not done-it's always he's "frantically" working on getting them up and running) Hopefully the judge will get tired of his excuses and lock him up before too long OR fine him so heavily he'll have to give up this property! NOBODY could do any worse!!!
this place sucks!: leasing agents don't care about you. I have waited for over 6 weeks for my security deposit and they still have not sent it to me . I have called ken 7 times he keeps telling me he will call me back. but he never does.
