Just got back from eating here and I'm not sure what has happened to Zia's since my last time there about 4 years ago. My wife and four kids (ages 10 to 5) were not at all happy with the quality of the food. My wife had fish and the rest of us had various pasta dishes (the kids had spaghetti and meat balls) and everything was drowning in sauce. The salads, which I remember as being wonderful, were also not up to par. Finally, while the portions are huge, they really should offer a kids menu. Even spitting portions was way too much food for the kids.
Upon reading some of the other recent reviews, it appears that the establishment has gotten complacent and is resting on its reputation. Had I read these reviews beforehand, I probably would have looked elsewhere. Others are correct, there are plenty of other good Italian restaurants at The Hill to settle for below average food with service to match.
My experience with the manager on duty at 7:00 pm on Friday, November 28th, was so terrible that I am compelled to share the mistreatment I, my wife, and my family received.
Having called Ziaâs at 6:00 pm to be placed on the waiting list, my family and several out-of-town guests were told to arrive at 7:00. Upon our arrival we were told our table would be ready around 8:00. We all understood the nature of the waiting listâand the fact that it is not a reservation. Still, this additional hour wait was confusing, since we had been told to arrive at 7:00 and not 8:00.
Yet, it was the treatment by the manager on duty that was inexcusable.
Wanting to understand the nature of this delay for future visits, I asked if it was due to an unexpected amount of diners. The restaurant was obviously crowded, and underestimating the number of patrons would have been a forgivable mistake.
Instead of answering my question, the manager threatened that she was ânot going to let me stand there and scream at her.â I apologized and explained that if my voice was raised I was simply trying to be heard over the noise of the crowded restaurant. At no point was I shouting or aggressive.
The manager continued to evade my question and condescend toward me, saying it was the day after Thanksgiving (as if I wasnât already aware of that), and the waiting list was only a âheads-up.â This vague explanation failed to address my question or to describe the waiting list on which weâd been placed.
She continued to flatly and unapologetically fence with us and give not a bit of friendly service or understanding. When I expressed my disappointment at her lack of customer service, and that I was a local resident who would not be returning to Ziaâs, she responded by saying, âGood.â
The manager was glad we werenât happy and she was glad we wouldnât be returning.
If this is acceptable customer service at Ziaâs, we certainly wonât be returning. But moreover, the managerâs lack of regard for usânot to mention her failure to treat us with even the modicum of respect one should offer a fellow human beingâspeaks to a total disregard for Ziaâs patrons. Her behavior does Ziaâs staff, management, and ownership a great disservice.
Great service!!!! Food was pretty good, especially the house salad.
