Simple menu, elegant dining in a casual atmosphere. Have tried many entree's, all have been delicious. The creamed spinach sidedish is "too die for"
My wife and I were celebrating our 5Th anniversary tonight and we decided to try out a new restaurant. The steak was amazing! I ordered the Rib eye and my wife ordered the fillet (Go with the rib eye, it was the best I've ever had) service was good, atmosphere was casual. Overall, a bit pricey $90+ bill for 2 incl tip, but we felt it was worth it. We went to Sam's steak house last year and there is no comparison in quality of the food.
Recently went to Citizen Kains for my 2 year wedding anniversary. My wife, from the land of Nebraska that has top-notch steaks, was impressed with the quality of the steaks at Citizen Kains. I too was impressed with my steak as well as the overall service.
As far as pricing goes, the average meal is around $30 or so, and some come with a side item and a salad. Given that a decent steak at a chain (i.e. Outback) is pushing $20+ these days, I didn't think the prices were too out of control at Citizen Kains for the bump up in food quality.
My lone complaint was the location where we were seated (even with a reservation, which is highly recommended). As you may know, the retaurant is in an old mult-story residence in Kirkwood. Our table was jammed in with 3 others in a side room (off to the right of the main entrance)that was VERY small (barely over 100 sq feet in my opinion). The big problem with the room was that it was so small that it trap all of the conversation noise, so it was extremely loud, making it difficult for my wife and me to even hold a conversation.
Overall great steak at an expected price. Try to ensure you get a good seat though! I've lived in St. Louis for 30 years and most people I know in the area would rank it in the top 3 steakhouses in the area.
