About:With alternative music blaring from the speakers and a tasty selection of teas and coffees, this cafe ranks as a favorite among the University City college crowd. The decor is not outstanding, but the tables are spacious. The cafe offers a small reading selection consisting of a dictionary and some magazines. With less than desirable cleanliness and a smoke-filled atmosphere, this may not be the best choice of a place to take business clients or colleagues. However, for those in town on business and looking for a good place to relax, have an iced mocha or coffee and bagel, it could be the place.

THIS is the friendliest store in town. Period. They make terrific coffee, which is a good thing for a coffee shop. They have all the syrups and additions if you like that stuff, but try a latte plain first. It's REALLY good. They subscribe to the NYTimes daily and there are locals that haunt the joint. Everyone is friendly and the staff is eager to please. Breads are from Companion, a STL bakery, and the owner has a limited but delicious selection of breakfast and lunch/dinner items from which to choose. (The kitchen is small, they do what they can.) I have heard alternative music but I've heard every other kind of music as well. They also have live music on occasion. But the place is small, so it's not a music venue. If you want to be green, bring your own coffee mug, the staff will be happy to fill 'er up for you. Great place.

A Place To Get Away: Some shops try to usher you out before you get comfortable; others let your take your mittens off and stay awhile. Meshuggah fits into the latter niche, a cozy cafe where the walls of art (changed periodically) will wow you until your drink is ready. While students tap away at laptops, and intellectuals belt out the reading materials they've memorized for just such an occasion, you can grab a paper, an RFT or the chess set and challenge a pal to a friendly game. If you want to get away from the winter chill breeze, head upstairs to the loft to read, study or simply watch patrons take turns wait for the bathroom.
Thumbs up: All drink items. The bagels. The sam'miches. The service. The refills.
Thumbs down: One bathroom. No late/all-night hours. Oh, and those pesky know-it-alls (Pack your ear plugs).
