Reviewed from Yahoo! Movies: Actually it was the Varsity(R.I.P.) that was the indie showcase of the 70's. The Tivoli was one of the last of the old Arthur Theater chain. I saw Claudine, Slaughter, and Golden Voyage of Sinbad there. It was a great place for Blaxploitation and karate flicks. It did go thru an amazing restoration years ago. My friend John, the older gentleman who takes the tickets can talk for hours about the theater. He is the guardian of the Bijou. If you ever get the chance, explore the building. All of the old collector items from lobby card and movie toys to the wonderful collection of movie one sheets, all with the St. Louis connection. The best concession stand, from wines to the giant gourmet cookies, to the best hot dogs. I would go and visit weekly when I worked at Streetside Records (R.I.P.). The Tivoli is one of the last of the original shops in the loop. I am glad it is still standing and going on as strong as ever. And it was Joe Edwards' brother who saved the Varsity. He has since turned the operation over to the Landmark chain, but they have been true to the vision of Mr. Edwards.
Reviewed from Yahoo! Movies: In the 1960's, Playboy Magazine declared the Tivoli had the best movie popcorn in the nation. It still has very good popcorn, though of course the theater itself has changed substantially from it's physically downtrodden days in the 1970's and '80's.
Back then, it was a poorly lit home to a myriad of famous foreign films. A faint ghost of a smear colored the white screen, where someone threw a brown soda, probably at some midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
But thanks to Joe Edwards, the benefactor of the U. City Loop, the Tivoli is beautiful again, and split into multiple theaters.
Parking is available at an open lot next door, or across the street in a covered garage.
A true local landmark.
