I love St Lukes Hospital, it is the only hospital I would go to. They have the best doctors by far and the most qualified heart staff and facility. I have been in their hospital as a patient 3 times and was very impressed every time. My neighbor underwent a heart procedure there and she too was very impressed.

The hospital billed Medicare almost $28,000 for retina surgery and a stay of 20 hours.
I requested an itemized statement from the hospital, and was told NO--we were supposed to get a statement from medicare.
Now we have to pay an atty. to find out if they have to give us an itemized statement on request.

Sounds to me like the person that told you NO needs to be looked into. What says this person didn't pocket that money! I'd take that person that told you no to the CEO of the hospital and I'd really do some looking into this. I would think Medicare would even question it. NO wonder Medicare is going broke! HELLO... The care was fine, but in today's world of medical treatment, beware of the doctor with a new toy.
At the St. Luke's Cancer Insitiute my wife was getting a simple procedure with a new insturment and the Doctor guinea pigged my wife, inviting other Dr's in to watch the procedure. We have major medical insurance so the deductible is ours to cover, unfortunately. The bill came in for the Doc, the Cancer Institute, the Anesthesiologist, and diagnostics and it was WELL over $9000. The new toy cost $7000 for the procedure.
There was no discussion of costs beforehand.
So here's the kicker, All of the doc's and labs involved have allowed us to pay off a modest amount each month, and we've diligently disposed of much of those obligations. We also did the same with the Cancer Institute (the ones with the big bill for the new toy), but that is not apparently good enough for them.
In a Draconian move that even Charles Dickens would have been proud to associate with Ebenezer Scrooge, we got a call between Christmas and New Year's telling us that, despite our best efforts to maintain payments, our bill would be going in to collection. This was after lengthy discussion and disclosure from us of financial means, and a commitment from them that if we continue to pay then we wouldn't go into collection.

So as good as the Doc's, nurses and staff may be, as kind as these (likely) God-fearing, good religious people are, they are now simply a means to an end: collecting an onerous interest rate (4% above market) like so many mobsters and kneecap-breakers. The medical staff of this institution is forever tainted, with smiles and pleasantries representing only the thinnest patina of genuine caring; they are simply fronting a backroom operation that guarantees not the continuing health of the people of Kansas City, but the continuing operation of this "not for profit" hospital, and their ability to bill too much, to not discuss the costs of services, to extract onerous sums and collect with a "vig" on the back end.

Yeah, one star. And how it has fallen--my kids were born there and even those beautiful experiences are now tainted.
