I was visiting the KC area with a friend and we were referred to Jack Stack BBQ for lunch. The appearance was nice, service was decent, food was fair. But when I ordered sweet tea, the waiter came back and said that they were out. I asked for a water until new sweet tea was available. The waiter said that they were out of the ingredients to make sweet tea!!? How does a restaurant run out of simple things like tea and sugar? That was probably my last visit to Jack Stack. There are just so many bbq places to choose from. How do you run out of tea and sugar? Oh well. Mike B.
I am from Oklahoma and have eaten Jack Stack once before. The first experience was great, but this time it was awful. I am a huge K.C. BBQ fan and know good BBQ when I eat it...meaning I appreciate the different demographic varities. I live in a small town and the two BBQ joints here are exponentially better than this. My wife got the sliced beef and pork and they both tasted rotten...seriously. The ribs tasted reheated and were very bland. If you go there, stick to the beans and onion rings.
P.S. - I also ate at Arthur Bryants and it was actualy worse than Jack Stack...what a disappointment KC BBQ has become
sigh...it is very disappointing to read such admiration for a rather mediocre BBQ restaurant! I respectfully disagree with most of the comments here---have these reviewers tried BBQ Shack? Wabash? even Rosedale's? Each of these (and many others! Sorry I don't mention all of you!), have a distinctive and more flavorful BBQ than Jack Stack.
We have tried this before and thinking we just must have been there on a bad night, have tried it again....It is not bad, but REALLY---this highly rated?? But then again, there are many, many McDonald's also; so...
Perhaps we have become jaded--we truly enjoy THE FOOD when eating out, so this mundane collection of average food bothers us. A positive is that the deserts are actually quite good, BUT is that why you go to a BBQ restaurant??
On a 1 to 10 scale, this is a solid 5. Not bad, mind you, just with so many good to excellent BBQ choices available in the KC area, why eat here?
Good points: pleasant wait staff, nice ambiance, fair prices.
Negatives: average food taste.
