I travel the midwest from Kansas to Indiana eating in small local eateries all the time. This is one of the best. The brisket is great. If you want consistently good food served with no nonsense this is the place.
I think Cooky's has been there since the 1930's and is pretty much the same inside since then, hence..no remodel and they shouldn't. You walk in and see pies, pies, pies! Anyone looking for a slice of heaven and comfort food (they do a great brisket with brown gravy) should definitely not miss this. They get visitors from all over the world there every week. We travel 45 minutes just to get a piece of Cooky's pie, well several actually, and then, of course, take one home (they'll mix and match a whole pie for you for variety). They have pies you've never heard of but my personal favorite is chocolate pecan. You can also call ahead to reserve a whole pie to eat there or take home.
I had the pleasure of eating at Cooky's twice while on a cross country bike trip. I had nine slices of blueberry pie ala mode, four for dinner, five for breakfast. I had a fried chicken and I had the brisket. This was the finest food I ate on my trip, and I'd be willing to be my reputation that the blueberry pie has no equal in the entire United States. To top it off, everyone was nice and in minor awe at how much I ate. How could I not? Now, back on the coast, I'm so fond of the place and so far away that I'll stoop to internet reviews just to remember the taste.
