I went to this drive in several years ago when I lived in Springfield and I LOVED it ! I always tried to park in the front and lay out in the grass on a blanket and watch the movies. The price is great, the playground for the kids is like I remember when I was a kid, and the concession stand though small has some good stuff to munch on, or you can pack up your car with goodies and bring them with you. All in all it is a great way to spend a weekend night and not have to spend a ton of money. I am moving back to Springfield this year and you can bet that this will be one of the first places that I head to ! I LOVE it !!!!!
A summer must: We have been going there for over 10 years! It is one of our summer traditions. Super price for movies. Great food choices at a great price. Or you can take in your own and they even allowed grills last year. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray! Sitting outside is the best way to watch a movie
Old time ambiance-great summer experience!: Drive-ins were not part of my growing up years, but I have learned to LOVE the experience.
I live in Springfield, MO, so the drive is about 45 minutes at the most. But it's worth it to me! $5 gets you two current movies. The food is reasonably priced when compared to big theater cost. But if you're tight on cash, you can always bring your own food and drink, including a GRILL, if you'd like. They have a reservable common area for groups and will reserve as many prime parking spots as you need if you call ahead.
If you have kids, there's a playground in the front with a merry-go-round, see-saws, swings, slides, and a basketball hoop. If you don't have kids and don't want to be covered with dust, I suggest parking anywhere BUT the front row.
The one thing that is a bit disappointing to me is the sound. They say they have Dolby Surround Sound, but when they are broadcasting it from one spot for every car, it tends to echo and can be hard to hear/understand what is being said on screen. We usually just tune into their radio broadcast in the car. But, if your battery is low, that can lead to some embarressment at the end of the night.
Overall, I've found the Sunset Drive-In charming, fun and accomodating and always make a point of going as much as possible during the summer months!
