The open gym volleyball used to be fantastic a few months ago. It was a skilled group of players and the play level was well above average. As the word got out, popularity grew. Then one day too many people showed up and players requested a second gym to open. Regardless of the availability of an empty gym at the time, staff refused to open a second gym; giving no reason other than “Because it’s up to the supervisors discretion and I say no.”
Naturally players filled out comment cards and wrote emails to complain. Staff retaliated by overselling open gym volleyball, encouraged the worst backyard players to come filter in, and encouraged these players to complain about the regulars. As the complaints rolled in about the players, this gave staff the opportunity to chew out the volleyball players, threatening dissolve open gym volleyball for good. Volleyball took a nose dive. The level of play dropped tremendously. Getting a good workout is difficult since the ball doesn’t stay in play much and players must rotate sometimes up to two or three per side. Regulars started looking for other places to play and many dropped their membership.
Staff has been inattentive and down right unwilling to accommodate. Volleyball has sunk to below average.

Great experiences with Sylvester Powell. Staff is attentive. Instructors are creative with the class options. The equipment is everything I need for a great workout. My children love the open gym and the pool.

Great entry desk staff! Great Service. The equipment is always clean and well-maintained. In 2007, they purchased the new Hammer Strength equipment. A great place to get a great workout while being in a comfortable environment. There are no hard sells like other clubs, but a community feel to working out. Also has a great pool, racquetball courts, basketball courts and an indoor track. I also love the reasonable day care rates. I love the atmosphere and all of the great fitness opportunities it has to offer.
