Woodyard has the best smoked chicken. Unusual little place most people wouldn't even notice musch less stop if you didn't know how good it is!
I ate at this place several years ago and the food was great. I don't know what has happened to the place but the experience today was not so great. Several weeks ago I had friends in town that wanted authentic KC bbq. I recommended the Woodyard but we ended up doing Jack Stack because of logistics. Boy, am I glad today that we didn't go to this place.
We had lunch there today. I opted for some ribs, a couple of sides and a coke. When ordering I was confronted with the rib special which was 4 bones / 2 sides of my choice and a softdrink for $8.50. I didn't think 4 bones was going to be enough because I was pretty hungry. So, I ordered half a slab of babybacks, 2 sides and a coke. My tab was $8.08 tax included. So, the special wasn't really all that special. I saved money and got more food by ordering items individually.
There is no air conditioning in this place. You an eat inside or on the brick patio. If you do, plan on returning to work smelling like you just spent the afternoon at a barbeque contest. Their brick BBQ pit is attached to this patio and smoke from it blankets the customer seating area.
We opted to sit on the wood patio attached to the building next door. We didn't catch much smoke there and though it was hot, we caught a little breeze up there.
The food today was aweful. The ribs were way overcooked and dry. Much of the meat was unetible. Additionally, ribs have a membrane that runs along the shiny bones. This membrane should be pulled before it is cooked. Otherwise, even perfectly cooked ribs will appear to be tough and chewy and the membrane is just kind of nasty. I was shocked that they would serve food that is this bad.
I will say that I believe this to be an isolated incidence. Because there is no way anyone would ever eat there again if their food was consistantly this bad. So best case scenario, this is an isolated incident and they have poor quality control.
The sides were ok. I ordered potato salad and ended up with coleslaw. The beans (which I ordered as my second side) were better than van camps right out of the can but not by much. No meat or onions in the beans.
This isn't fine dining and it isn't supposed to be. I went to this resturant with very low customer service expectations but high expectations for quality bbq. Unfortunately the resturant failed on pretty much every level today. The folks there are nice and I hope they can get it together. It might cost money to throw away a rack of ribs occassionally when the bones become dry... It's a little extra work to pull the membrane from that rack of ribs but establishing and maintaining a minimum level of quality control is critical to establish and keep a customer base.
Awesome Food: This place is just like eating at home in the back yard. The food is great and in the summer time or on those warm winter days you can even eat out on the patio's.
