My girlfriend and I visited this restaurant for the first time on a Friday night. All other places had a waiting time of over 45 minutes so we decided to give it a try. Surprisingly , ShoGunâs parking lot was almost empty which we figured out later was for good reason. We got seated very quickly and got our drinks almost immediately. This was the only enjoyable part of the evening. When the chef arrived and announced âsee ya tomorrowâ in regards to the fact that I like my steak well done kind of stunned me. I know that some people are trying to be funny, but it did not come out right in the beginning. Throughout the process he was still making rather rude comments. I had a feeling that I had personally and seriously offended his entire family. For instance when I was âconsultingâ with my girlfriend about nature of the sauces he interrupted me with the question âwhy I donât like itâ. Hmm, let me see. Because I did not have any food on my plate and I did not have a chance yet to try it out before I establish whether I like it or not. I can understand that the restaurant is slow and you donât make as much money, but the best advice I can give to you is to find another job. If I am spending $50 bucks on the dinner of two the least I should expect is not to be interrupted by smart *ss comments from the cook and not to feel guilty about making him work on Friday evening. The last straw was when I asked to pour soya sauce on my food, he replied with the comment -âOf course, itâs free anywayâ. Thatâs pretty much concluded my already not so good mood for the night.

About the food.
First came the âsoupâ. Note the quotation marks. Their definition of soup is a small bawl of warm water with bouillon cube and two tiny slices of mushrooms floating in it. I swear, this is it. The salad consisted of âvery tiredâ lettuce with dressing. The main course plates were covered with oily coat. Seemed like they were rushing through the process, which resulted in undercooked vegetables. However, for some strange reason, everyoneâs steak was only put on the stove after spaghetti (?), rice and vegetables were already on the plates.
This sort of disappointment had happened to me only once before. Needless to say that I was completely dissatisfied with the food, service and attitude in this establishment. THEY ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY WITHOUT PROVIDING SIMPLE RESULTS IN RETURN. I STRONGLY ADVICE YOU NOT TO GO TO SHOGUN. I have not been in many Japanese type of restaurants but would definitely suggest to try GOJO on Plaza instead. Itâs a little tighter in there, but the food is better, youâll get much more food and itâs cheaper. Did I mention that in Gojo you will also get an icecream for desert. And yeah, donât forget to make a reservation to GOJO especially on Friday-Saturday night.
In conclusion I would like to say that with this type of customer service, food and prices itâs no wonder that Shogun has an empty parking lot.
3.5 Stars: Generally speaking - slow on serving food. I have been there three (3) times and have enjoyed it each time.
By far, one of the best in KC.: First and foremost, the service here is top-notch. The sushi is my main fave and the size of each piece is substantially larger than most sushi bars. The price is a bit more than I'd prefer but they really make up for it in presentation and certainly in portion size.
Incredible service and exceptional quality of fish and presentation makes this Steakhouse one of the best in Kansas City.
