My daughter saw the Wizard of Oz on television recently. Since then, she's become obsessed with all things Oz. Her third birthday was today, so my wife and I decided to take her to the Oz Museum. After reading the reviews here, and a couple other sites, we were pretty excited. Now that we're back, we're a bit under-whelmed.
An Oz-themed museum that doesn't have an actual yellow-brick road for you to "follow," should already give you pause. The entire museum is nothing more than someone's collection of Oz-themed stuff. Some new, some old, some you can buy in the gift shop...
They do have statues of the characters, who are fairly close representations, although Glenda the Good Witch was being "fixed," on this day. Right next to what you think might be one of Dorothy's dresses from the movie (it's not...), is a tiny, 2-inch, triangular swatch from a scrap of material, that was cut off the hem, of one of Dorothy's dresses from the movie. They also have Ray Bolger's (Scarecrow) passport, and an actual cancelled check, complete with certificate of authenticity, written by Jack Haley (Tinman). Toto, the gift shop's mascott dog, who is also the Toto for the stage musical incidentally, will pose for pictures with you if you ask the nice lady at the register. That was certainly a highlight.
This museum might be interesting if you've been a fan of the Wizard of Oz, since 1939. Those of us who saw it for the first time in 1983, and in my daughter's case - 2008, the museum certainly left something to be desired. Definitely NOT worth the $14 we spent to get in (my 3 year old was free - I guess that's something...). You other reviewers on this site owe me 14 bucks...
My Family loved it!: Me wife and daughter loved the museum. You should go there!
Fun at the Oz Museum: My dad & mom took me to go see the Oz museum and it was so much fun. My great grandma works there that made it even that more specail. She was able to take us through the museum and show us everything! The museum shows everything about the Oz from years ago to the most modern versions. They also have gorgous China dolls of all the characters. They have huge gift shop where you can get just about anything! My grandma bought me my first Toto and he came in a basket just like the movie! You should definately go!
