It may have been good when Lena ran it but it is TERRIBLE now. If you have even a slightly sophisticated palate, PLEASE avoid this place. On a road trip from Phoenix to Kansas City, we found ourselves overnight in Abilene where the locals highly touted Mr. K's. We couldn't have been more disappointed. We started with a fried mushroom appetizer which was of a cheap sports bar quality.
The chicken fried steak (a house favorite) is a food service product thawed out and drowned in a packaged gravy. The pan fried chicken (for which we waited 35 minuted) bore none of the tell-tale signs of pan frying and tasted like another food service product. Can you say Cisco Foods? Can you say Banquet? The only tasty part of our meals was the house salad dressing but since it dressed nothing but iceberg lettuce; how good do you think it was? If this is home style cooking (as advertised) why would you prepare it to taste like a frozen dinner?
If You Like IKE - You'll Like the History & Food: Good home-cooked taste in the food. GREAT pies. Good prices. A fun sense of history since it has the ambiance of being Pres. Eisenhower's favorite home town restaurant. Let them "paddle" you on your birthday and get your meal for 1/2 price.
