Usually dine in the bar at a table as like to relax after work. Bar is spacious and quiet. The food is good. Keep in mind too that they have "happy hour" every week night from 5:00 P.M.(when they open) until 6:30 P.M. Love that cottage cheese appetizer!
Trust me this place is grossly overrated. Atmosphere circa 1972. Plastic chairs. Wall decorations are framed newspaper clippings. Their "special" cottage cheese appetizer is pathetic. Was there on a Saturday night. Service terrible. Waited 5 minutes for glass of water. Another 15 minutes for a drink. The second drink didn't arrive until the meal was over! Steaks ordinary. Anyone giving a positive review of this place needs to get out more. Only an Iwegian could love this place. Please if you're from out of town don't waste your time and money. It sucks!
Johnny's is great!: This is a great piece of Omaha history and a great place to get a steak. Located near what was once the stockyards, the food is entirely made from scratch. The steak and salads are great. The service when I was there was superb. Only knock: the decor could use updating; however, I go to restaurants for the food, not the appearance.

How was the food? Ordinary? I don't think so.
Hey, if you didn't like it, you didn't like it. I'd point out two things. 1) The special cottage cheese appetizer is complimentary, so it's not like you were ripped off there; if you didn't like it, no one forced you to eat it.(as an aside, at one time, they used to serve liver pate, but times and tastes have changed) 2) I don't know where you were sitting, but I've sat in leather padded booths on every visit. Hey, I get out plenty, but if you're happier at Sullivans or Ted's Grill, peace be with you. I will agree with you 100% on the decor.
I get it that you didn't like it. So what alternatives would you offer for out-of-towners?
Been traveling to Omaha for 6 years. Still haven't found a good restaurant to eat at.
