Zea's is an excellent restaurant to visit in the New Orleans area when you are looking for a detour from traditional New Orleans cuisine. The staff is always friendly, and the servers are always helpful and prompt.
While all of the appetizers are delicious, I suggest starting with one of Zea's homemade hummus dishes. Both are fresh and served with slightly crispy, warm pita wedges. (Extra pita is available upon request.) These are great appetizers for a crowd.
For main courses, it is hard to go wrong. A few suggestions are the Thai Ribs, the rotisserie or pepper jelly chicken salad, any of the three paninis, or, for a more traditional flair, the red beans and rice.
The Thai Ribs are moist and fall-off-the-bone tender. They come with a choice of two sides, of which I recommend you make at least one of your two choices the roasted corn grits. They are addictively creamy and have an amazing texture.
The salads at Zea's are all large and delicious, but the two I recommend are my two favorites. The pepper jelly chicken salad comes with two perfectly grilled chicken breasts coated in Zea's incredible pepper-jelly salad dressing. Divine! The rotisserie salad is great because it gives you a variety of the rotiserrie meats available at Zea's to try in small, bite-size morsels. I suggest the house ranch with this salad.
The paninis are absolutely spectacular, and if dining with a companion or two (or if you just want some amazing leftovers), they make a great compliment to split with a salad. If dining with four, order one to split as an appetizer! My favorites are the philly beef and the sedona chicken. Both are served on warm and crispy pitas with an ooey-gooey cheesy center of meat, onions, and seasonings. Each panini is served with a slightly spicy, barbeque-honey mustard dressing on the side. Definitely a must-have item.
Finally, Zea's take on red beans and rice is no less wonderful and unique than any of their other dishes. The hearty and plentiful serving of fluffy white rice covered in creamy, perfectly seasoned red beans is topped by two perfectly golden fried boneless, skinless chicken breasts. In a word, perfection!
To end the meal (if there is room) definitely try the sweet potato bread pudding. Sweet and creamy with a brandy cream sauce, it is the perfect end to a Zea's meal. When in Rome...
Overall, Zea's is a perfect place to head to for a nice dinner. It is moderately priced, and a great value for the food that you will be receiving. I suggest you dress a little nicer than jeans and a t-shirt if you are heading there for dinner, but lunch time is casual and just as wonderful as dinner time. Enjoy!
