I've been going to Kirin in one form or another since it first opened in a tiny little office-front about 8 years ago,and initially,I was amazed.
Since then,it has consistently decreased in quality, leading to the current review.
Service : Sub-par,at best. Several servers actually do try to earn the tip,but the ones who know they can get away with adding it themselves tend to do so with great vigor.
Ambiance: I want a sushi bar,not a spin off of some trendy Vegas club by night.Simply put,if the attention to decor had been spent properly,it would be amazing. As it is,jarring colours tend to dominate, and the fact that the upstairs bar is a "hip" hangout ruins the entire feel.
Food : This is by far the most important, and saddest aspect. To preface,I've lived in Japan for 6 months,so I may be jaded, but I can always appreciate good effort, knife work, and a freshness.
Sadly, all of this is currently lacking,as my meal was frankly inedible. Ordering fatty tuna, which is normally a delicacy, was painful. Not only was the sashimi cut at 3 inch thickness, something never done properly, the pieces I had were nearly frozen, leading me to believe that they had recently been defrosted under-water in a hurry.
The more standard, and safer fare, was equally sad. Fresh Yellowtail was anything but,and the cuts included the bloodline and connective tissue. Needless to say, this repeated the entire meal.
I can't stress this enough,if the place had stayed true to itself as it did when it first opened,it would be amazing still. Now,it capitalizes on the fact that sushi is considered trendy.
The waitresses take it upon themselves to add their tip on your bill. GRATUITY should be added in cases of 6 or more. We went..there were 3 of us eating. I had a 2 year old with us and my husband stopped to pick him up and ended up having a COKE. THE IGNORANT BLONDE waitress did a HORRIBLE job of taking care of us. We had to ask for napkins, silverware, re fills...EVERYTHING. We might as well have waited on ourselves. At the end of the meal the stupid BLONDE added gratuity to our bill even though my husband only stopped long enough to have a coke and pick up the 2 yr old that didn't even eat. SINCE WHEN IS A 2 YR OLD COUNTED AS AN ADULT??? bottom line is..if you want crappy service..ASK for a blonde waitress. You will wait on yourself, and in the end you will pay a big tip she never earned. She got a $10 for not bringing anything, not checking on us and only 3 people were there to eat. Don't bother saying anything to a manager..they don't do their job...they just say."it is at the waitresses digression" SOUNDS LIKE B/S to me. I have worked in the resturant business for 15 years...this is NOT how you keep one running!
This is our favorite resturant in the Hammond, La area. We are from New Orleans-having been displaced by Katrina. The only thing that we do not like is the extremely loud 'music'.We feel that the music should be at least lowered, however, it would be more in keeping with Asian cusine to have Asian music playing softly in the background.
The food is very good, prices are good, and the service is wonderful.
