   MoreLocated by the Bayou Teche, the Oaklawn Manor was built in the year 1837 by an Irish immigrant Alexander Porter. Along with the house Porter also bought the surrounding area for plantation work, the business boomed in no time since he was supported by the people of the village. However, due to health issues, the Oaklawn saw the last of the Porter family until Alexander's death in 1844. The house was then taken over by his brother's family who finally sold it to a New Yorker due to sugar cane low production. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house is open to the public where you can see the majestic architecture of the mansion and the lawn area. Less
