WELL I GIVE JAYS BBQ ON SHERWOOD BLVD.5 STARS.IT'S THE ONLY ONE OWNED BY MR.JAY.I STARTED EATING JAYS SINCE 1960.I WAS BORN WHEN THEY OPENED IN 1954.IM 54 YEARS OLD AND I STILL LOVE THE BBQ BEEF PO-BOY(SLICED)...........
My Aunt first took me to Jay's in 1954 when I was about 6 years old. In those days it was located in the middle of a gravel lot along with several other fast food shops (maybe The western Burger and Allessi's Drive Inn and ???) between Government and Florida and somewhere between the Rebel Drive Inn and Fleur de Lis. My aunt's favorite was the BQ chicken while mine has allways been the BQ beef poyboy.
I've eaten at the newer Gov't and Sherwood Forrest restaurants, dine in, take out and drive thru. If someone received a dry sandwhich it must have been because the order was misunderstood. Their BQ sandwhiches and poyoys are almost wet with sauce. And Dipping sauce is available if you need more.
Since the closing of Pretania a few years ago, BR is missing a really good hamburger. Jays might be the best available now. I like my hamburgers charbroiled (Jays-yes), medium rare (Jay's - no, medium well), with sharp cheddar cheese (Jays - no, American), on a toasted bun (Jays- yes), with lettuce(Jays-yes), tomato (jays-yes), onion (jays-no), and dijon mustard (jays-no).
Their turkey sandwhich dressed (without bq sauce) is the best of its kind available in BR. If you like your roast beef dressed without BQ sauce theirs is good too as is their ham sandwhich.
Their BQ sauce is an old fashioned type similar to the Blue Ribbon brand that used to be available in BR groceries. Sort of a mustard bq with a little and pickle. If you're looking for ribs and pulled pork I'd go elsewhere. This sauce is beter with sliced and chopped beef; and it's not too bad on chicken.
I'm not crazy about their sides except for the curly cues. And they don't have Tabasco only Louisiana Hot Sauce. You can't allways get what (or rather everything) you want.
The staff is allways prompt and friendly at either location. Jays does a very good job at what it does.
After ordering JUST a BBQ sandwich, I waited at the drive thru window for 13 minutes. When I received my sandwich it was $5.00 even. A little much for just a sandwich especially one with no BBQ sauce and a bun that was very OVER grilled. I'm just glad I didn't choke on it. That will be my last experience at Jays.
