I love Julie Annes and have never been dissapointed when i go! the thing that teally stands out about them is they make everything there! its always fresh and their employees are always eager to help me. i will be a life long customer.
I read some of the five star reviews for this place and thought I'd make the drive out to see just how good this place is.
From the outside, Julie Anne's Bakery is very cute and looks like a wonderful place. Once I walked in, my first impression was that it was a very busy place. All the workers seemed very hectic and rushed. As I was looking at the selection, one of the workers asked me if I was ready (which is perfectly courteous) and when I answered I was still looking, replied with a very impatient expression (hands on the hips, big sigh, etc.) Perhaps if the place actually was busy, this would be pardonable, but when I actually looked around, there were perhaps 2 occupied tables and 3 people (including me) looking to buy something.
My next impression of the place was that it was not at all cute on the inside. Rather, it seemed almost clinical and barren. Of particular note are the white laminate floors, the white metal display cases, and the rather cheap and poorly arranged tables. The workers did not even seem to have a standard uniform, unless it was a white apron.
I ended up spending about $6 for one chocolate chip cookie, one blueberry muffin, and one loaf of cinnamon bread. I figured a decent muffin would prove competence, a delicious cookie would prove talent, and a loaf of bread would make me seem less crazy for buying one muffin and one cookie.
The Muffin:
The muffin was disgusting. First off, they did not offer to warm it up, though I did that anyway when I got home. Second, it was extremely greasy as far as muffins go. And third, I don't think the blueberries were real, but rather something akin to what you find in boxes of Jiffy muffin mix. My conclusion here was that I could find something better prepackaged in a gas station or vending machine.
The cookie:
The cookie was not terrible, but it was well below average. From what I could tell, they tried to make it extra chewy and give it a unique taste by using a bit of molasses in place of sugar. While the attempt is respectable, it still wasn't a good cookie. I'd recommend going to the grocery store and buying some Pillsbury cookie dough in place of going to Julie Anne's.
The Cinnamon Bread:
This was pretty basic cinnamon bread, maybe a little extra greasy, but that could just be from the sticky icing they put on it.
The Selection:
I mentioned what I bought, but I should also mention what I didn't buy. This is not the place to go if you want cookies. I went there planning to buy a dozen or so chocolate chip cookies, but only got the one for fear of wiping out their entire stock. They had a few chocolate chip, a few sugar, and maybe one or two other types of cookies. The selection of breads was also depressing and limited to cinnamon, white, wheat, and raisin. They did have a large variety of scones, but I assume that is only because they could make the same base scone and add a different type of canned fruit on top of each. If my memory serves me correctly, they also had 12 varieties of ice cream (which I was surprised to see, I mean, since when is ice cream a "baked good"?) and 20 cakes on display, and some pretty cupcakes.
Overall, my suggestion is go to the closest grocery store. The food is cheaper and tastier, and the atmosphere is likely friendlier.
Funny, I just heard someone say that they had the worst italian cream cake ever from J's. I do like the turkey walnut wrap and petitfors, but i have a serious problem with their cake decorating.
I went by on Friday to order a cake for Monday, they said oh, you dont have to order it, we always have them in stock. I said, well I'd like to order it just to make sure. I want it to say Happy Birthday Susie. Monday morning, get there, they have no idea, no order they can find, so they pull a cake off the shelf, and I tell them what its supposed to say. They take it to the back, 10 min later, it comes out, I pay and take it to work without looking. When we open it at work it says Happy Bitrtday Susie, yes, way off, so I called and the manager was like, oh, that was way off. Yeah. Even though the cake was delicious, can't i get a free cookie or something. Thank goodness it was just an everyday birthday cake and not something bigger.
I will always be addicted to their cream cheese king cakes though!!!!
