Absolutely the best. I have been stationed around the world and I still love going home to Jim Bowie's and taking the trip with my folks back in time a few years. Take into consideration that most of the people out there don't get the luxury of crossing the only LA DOT operated ferry in the state. For those that do, they know that at the top of the river bank lies what is the best down home resturant in north Louisiana. Just to get you talking, there is the grist mill, the school house, the boat house, the church (my favorite), and the "petting zoo" (don't pet the alligators please). Also there is a hall of heroes. This is where the relay station folks really went out and did it right. The hall of heroes is a building dedicated to the military from our particular part of the state. It has photographs of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, reservists, national guardsmen, coast guard. These photographs date back further than current memories can recall.
Walking inside the resturant you are met with the flora and fauna of the Louisiana bayou's. And once in the dining area you can get 100 years of Louisiana political history in a matter of 5 minutes, as you scan the room. Thousands of political campaign posters adorn every available open space in the room. Names like Jindall, Roemer, McKeithen, O K Allen, Long (both of them) and even some that we didn't like.
If you are ever in North LA and find yourself in the area of Enterprise, LA, stop in and check out the Relay station. It is definitely worth the time.
Good food, Great service. This establishment has a down home atmosphere and they make you feel like family. This is a must see for anyone interested in the culture of the state of Louisiana, with several "displays" harkening back to the earlier times. All of the building on the premises were well built with a historical touch. The entertainment was excellent and the waitress' were top notch.... very classy.
Very unique!!: Eating in this place is just like eating at your own table at home. You are surrounded by good service, good food and some of the best people you could ever want to meet. As you walk around to all of the different attractions, it is like taking a trip back through time. The younger people of this day and time are able to see what life was like in the country years ago. I missed that era, but not by much, so I am familiar with some of the things on display. It is a wonderful place to take the children, young and old, and let them walk around and work up a good appetite and then go inside for a good meal. Mr. Bartmess tries to get around to meet everyone in person and visit with them for a while and will answer any questions they may have.
It is obvious that Mr. Bartmess takes alot of genuine pride in what he has done and is doing. The food is excellent and plentiful. If you go away hungry, it is your own fault. He has some very good entertainment lined up each week that is bound to bring back memories to each and everyone there whether it is an old gospel hymn or just an old song that you used to sing. The people there do their best to please everyone. It is a wonderful place to visit and I promise you, you will find something that interests you!!
